Smith misses out on Bayern clash

Mon 18 Feb, 07:45 PM

Aberdeen midfielder Jamie Smith has lost his fitness battle ahead of the UEFA Cup clash at Bayern Munich. The former Celtic player, who netted twice in the 4-0 win over Copenhagen, missed the 2-2 draw against the Germans with a hamstring injury and will not be risked for Thursday's return.

However, Richard Foster has overcome the same problem and Andrew Considine will travel to Germany after missing Sunday's 3-1 Clydesdale Bank Premier League defeat by Hibernian through illness.

Calderwood told his club's official website: "Jamie Smith was very close to making it but he was still feeling the injury a bit and I can't take the chance.

"Jamie has been a bit of a talisman for us this season and he is a very important player but he was still feeling it and if he played and injured it he could be over and out for the season.

"You just can't take a chance with those type of things. Hopefully he might be back for the Kilmarnock or Motherwell games."

Derek Young, Jackie McNamara and Richie Byrne also remain on the sidelines, while Dan Smith picked up an injury in training on Saturday and will not play.
