Southend striker James Walker is determined to help spearhead Steve Tilson's side's promotion push after enjoying a memorable Roots Hall debut.Walker completed his protracted move from Charlton on Friday after the original deal in January broke down over concerns raised about a heart problem the 20-year-old suffered with.

After being monitored by medical experts, Walker was allowed to restart his career, and did so in memorable fashion as he came off the bench to score the winner in the 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Shrimpers are now two points adrift of the play-off pack and Walker is relishing the chance to impress under Tilson.

"We can still make the play offs," declared Walker. "We have a good squad of players and if we can give it a little bit extra we can push on from here."

On his on-off move, Walker added: "I always felt fit and didn't feel that there was anything wrong with me. I am fine to be playing again and I just have to have a check-up every year."
