NETHERLANDS

PSV are top with 56 points after their 1-0 victory at Willem II Tilburg.

They hold a nine-point lead over Ajax, who thumped Sparta 6-2, Feyenoord and NAC Breda.

Jonathan de Guzman struck on the stroke of half time to inspire Feyenoord to a hard-fought 1-0 home win against Vitesse Arnhem while NAC won 1-0 at Graafschap Doetinchem to secure their seventh successive win.

Sixth-placed Groningen beat AZ Alkmaar 2-1 with Marcus Berg opening the scoring for the home side after 29 minutes.

Kew Jaliens equalised six minutes before time but Berg hit the winner from the penalty spot two minutes later after a foul from goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

GREECE

Heavy snow across Greece caused havoc with the Super League programme.

The games involving Panathinaikos - away at Atromitos Athens - and AEK Athens, who were due to play Xanthi at the Olympic Stadium, were both postponed leaving Olympiacos top of the table after their 1-0 win over bottom side Ergotelis.

Olympiacos have 47 points, one more than Panathinaikos and five more than third-placed AEK.

The match between Levadiakos and Iraklis also fell foul of the weather.

Three games, however, did go ahead. PAOK produced a solid performance and a goal in each half to beat Apollon Kalamaria 2-0.

OFI Crete eased their relegation worries with a convincing 3-0 win over Veria.

The game between Aris Salonika and Asteras Tripolis in Thessaloniki was delayed after authorities removed a protest banner in the crowd.

When it got underway Aris strengthened their grip on fourth place with a 2-0 win in spite of playing most of the game with ten men.

ARGENTINA

Boca Juniors eased to a 4-0 victory over Argentinos Juniors in the second round of the Clausura championship, the big win serving as an ideal warm-up for next week's Copa Libertadores opener.

River Plate drew 0-0 at Newell's Old Boys, offering some encouragement to former Argentine international Diego Simeone, who had seen his team lose to Peru's San Martin in the opening Libertadores Cup clash last week.

Apertura champions Lanus have also struggled to rediscover last year's form and suffered another setback with a 1-0 loss at Huracan, while Independiente came close to emulating Boca's scoreline with a 4-1 win over Tigre.

San Martin maintained their 100 percent start to the campaign with a 1-0 upset of San Lorenzo, Estudiantes-La Plata beat Gimnasa-Jujuy 2-0 and Velez Sarsfield overcame Olimpo by the same margin. All three winning teams have six points from two matches.

MEXICO

Argentine striker Esteban Solar scored twice in Pumas UNAM's 4-1 trouncing of Chiapas, triggering the sacking of Jaguars coach Rene Isidoro Garcia.

Solari scored either side of halftime before Ismael Iniguez and Ignacio Scocco extended Pumas' lead. Juan Pablo Garcia scored a consolation for the Jaguars three minutes from time.

The win put Pumas on seven points, trailing leaders Guadalajara by seven in Mexico's Clausura championship.

Santos Laguna put three goals past Apertura champions Atlante without reply. Daniel Luduena, Christian Bentez and local favourite Fernando Arce scored the goals that lifted Santos Laguna to nine points, trailing Guadalajara, Toluca and Pachuca.

Tecos (UAG) beat Puebla 3-2 in an full-blooded encounter with Tecos goalkeeper Hetor Altamirano among the scorers.

BRAZIL

Sao Paulo lost their unbeaten record in the Brazilian state championship on Sunday, slipping to a 3-2 defeat at Marilia.

Ponte Preta underlined the growing strength of smaller clubs by ousting fellow minnows Guaratingueta from top spot to open a six-point lead over third-placed Sao Paulo, who were decimated by injury and suspension.

Ponte Preta beat Guaratingueta 3-0 in a table-topping clash between the less fashionable clubs of the Sao Paulo state championship.

Former Brazil international Denilson made his debut for Palmeiras and helped inspire the club to an emphatic 4-0 win over Juventus.

Reigning Sao Paulo state champions Santos slipped into deeper trouble by losing 2-1 to bottom-placed Rio Preto.

In the Rio de Janeiro state championship, Flamengo scored a late winner to beat Vasco da Gama 2-1 and reach the final of the first stage of the competition.

AFRICAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

FC105 Libreville beat Ghana's former winners Hearts of Oak 3-0 in the African Champions League, a week after one of the Gabon army club's players died in a domestic league match.

The Gabon champions, forced to play the continental competition match despite the death last Sunday of international Guy Tchingoma, were easy winners of the first round, first leg tie played in Libreville.

Hearts of Oak, who had not played a competitive match since December when Ghana's league closed down for the just-completed African Nations Cup finals in the country, were one of two former winners who suffered surprise defeats on Sunday.

Cameroon's Union Douala were also beaten away, losing 3-1 to ASKO Kara of Togo in Lome.

Tunisia's Club Africain marked their return to the Champions League after more than a decade with a 2-1 away win at ACS Saloum of Senegal, coming from a goal down at half-time to score twice in the last 20 minutes in Koalack.

On Saturday, five time champions Zamalek of Egypt began their campaign with a 2-1 away win over Rwanda's army club APR FC in Kigali.

Morocco's Royal Armed Forces proved too strong for Sporting Praia of the Cape Verde Islands in Rabat with a 3-0 home win.

On Friday, Algeria's' Entente Setif recorded the biggest win of the weekend's first round, first leg matches with a 5-1 triumph away at ASC SNIM of Mauritania.

The return legs are to be played on the weekend of February 29, March 1-2. Defending champions Etoile Sahel of Tunisia have a bye into the second round.
