Vettel frustrated despite setting pace

Fri, 18 Feb 20:43:00 2011

Sebastian Vettel admitted he was frustrated by a lack of track of time despite setting the pace on the opening day of F1 testing at Catalunya.

The Red Bull driver suffered a number of minor trips off track in the damp conditions that greeted teams during the morning, which led to the team carrying out a number of precautionary checks as a result.

Those checks took longer than expected which in turn meant Vettel was unable to return to the track until the closing moments of the session although he was still able to set the quickest time of the day with a late lap knocking Fernando Alonso off top spot.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t complete many laps today, as we had a long break – longer than expected,” he said.

“It wasn’t anything big, nothing broke, but at the test if you think there might be a problem then you’d rather take the car apart and check.

“The boys did their best and we still got some runs towards the end of the day – not as much as we’d like, but the car feels good and hopefully we’ll do more tomorrow.”

Head of race engineering Ian Morgan agreed with Vettel that it was frustrating to have lost time on track.

“It was frustrating today, as we lost some time making checks to the car during lunch,” he said. “It’s what testing is for, but we would have liked to complete more laps today.”

Vettel is there to deliver the title, RB and their mechanics are there to provide the car to do it, when the car isn`t good enough Vettel is entitled to moan, without a good car he wont deliver the title again....then again if RB provide a good enough car and Vettel doesn`t deliver RB and the mechanics are entitled to moan....F1 is big business with vast amounts of money at stake, not a back-slapping gentleman's club and I am sure all the mechanics at RB will be 100% behind their WC no matter what he says because they are professionals and paid to do a job.

  4. Mike S Conway, go watch the original Vettel interview after the tests yesterday on the BBC site (or other F1 sites) he is praising his engineers, not putting them down.

  5. @10 thanks for the chuckle. you couldn't be further from the truth about me or my opinions on nice guy loser drivers as you so elegantly put it.

point is Sebastien should watch his mouth as his mechanics may not be as willing to back him later on in the season if he continues complaing about them in interviews. an experienced driver would bend over backwards to help, feeding them information and motivating them if nothing else if they wanted to get on with their own day job. world champion or not, he is young still and has a lot of growing up to do. pity it is in the media spotlight.

  8. Um...Doesnt an oil leak caused by a broken clamp which lead to a barbequed engine count as a problem?

Not Vettel`s job to get dirty, his job to win the title, which he is well capable of doing again I think you will agree?
All potential WCs moan, those that don`t are obviously content with 2nd or 3rd....F1 is not a popularity contest and if you think it is....when F1 starts again I am sure you will switch over to watch `big brother` or `I`m a celebrity`.
It seems to me most brits on here root for Mr Nice-guy Loser....if he is a brit AND a nice guy AND a loser so much the better....all potential champs have the ability to snipe and moan....Alonso, Hammy, Vettel etc because 2nd is losing and that is what sets them apart from the guys who "Hold Station!"

  11. Red flag ? Yes Alonso done two full race distances with out a glitch on full fuel tanks and Vetel running on air. He had to be frustrated with that performance. Ferrari the only car that isnt causing problems. What a pneaumatic system that Ferrari has got that wont give any problems. You didnt tell me McLaren was at M H P E worried about all their pressures?

  15. Don't suppose he got his hands dirty and helped with the checks instead of moaning about how long they took after his off track excursions. He has a lot of talent but needs to learn when to keep quiet.

the mechanics have a job to do to keep him safe and the car in good trim operating at it's full potential for him to fling around under incredible G-force loads and not fall apart.

"Those checks took longer than expected" So they are saying that they expected Vettel to run off the track multiple times. Wonder whose fault that was??
Guess Marko will blame it all on Webber.
