Coleman calls for fans' backing

Tue 18 Mar, 06:15 PM

Rotherham chairman Denis Coleman has issued a rallying cry to supporters after the club went into administration. The promotion-chasers have dropped from sixth to 12th as a result of the mandatory 10-point deduction for going into administration and now face a real battle to secure an immediate return to League One.

"This is a sad day for the club but we are hopeful that, by working closely with the administrators, the club can live to fight another day," said Coleman.

"It is important the fans continue to rally around the club and get behind the team as we have a big game coming up against Bradford (on Saturday).

"We are desperate to make it back into the play-off places despite the 10-point deduction."

Rotherham, who were a Championship club three seasons ago, also went into administration two summers ago and were forced to take a 10-point penalty last campaign which ultimately led to their relegation.

"Contrary to popular misconception, delaying the administration until March 27 will not allow the club to postpone a 10-point penalty until next season - the date of March 27 would only be relevant if the club was definitely going to be relegated," said a club statement.

"The board reluctantly took the view that in light of the club's escalating liabilities and lack of new investment, administration was a necessary step in order to ensure a safe future."

Administrator Jeremy Bleazard, who will run United in the interim, appealed for a new owner to come to the rescue.

"We need people to come forward immediately. The survival of the club depends on finding a purchaser," he said.

"Administration will give the club breathing space and the opportunity to restructure its finances."
