American Ted Ligety won the giant slalom World Cup for the third time after the final race of the season at Lenzerheide was cancelled because of bad weather.

Ligety, who also won the world championship in the same discipline this year, had been leading the standings ahead of Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal and Frenchman Cyprien Richard going into the race.

He dominated the season in the discipline, winning the first three races.

He is the fifth skier to win a hat-trick of crystal globes in the discipline following Ingemar Stenmark, Alberto Tomba, Michael von Gruenigen and Hermann Maier.

The 26-year-old, combined Olympic gold medallist in 2006, previously won the title in 2008 and 2010.

Thursday's super-G at Lenzerheide was also cancelled due to bad weather, leaving Swiss Didier Cuche to pick up the crystal globe.

Croatia's Ivica Kostelic has already won the overall men's World Cup title.

Organisers said the women's slalom, also due to be held on Friday, would be delayed but would go ahead.

Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch are battling for the overall women's title, which is expected to go down to the last race of the season, the giant slalom on Saturday.

  3. Congratulations to Ted on his GS crystal globe. It's too bad that today's race was cancelled, but Ted is a worthy champion and deserves the crystal globe. The GS globe couldn't have gone to a nicer person. I've met Ted several times when the World Cup tour has been in Garmisch and he has always been very gracious about signing autographs and posing for photos. He is a great ambassador for the USA.
