Mixu boosted by UEFA Cup scrap

Fri 18 Apr, 10:30 AM

Hibernian manager Mixu Paatelainen believes the Old Firm's fight for the SPL title has breathed new life into the battle for a UEFA Cup place.Celtic's injury-time 2-1 win over Rangers on Wednesday has narrowed the gap to the Ibrox side to just a point, raising the prospect of a thrilling championship climax.

It means the remaining top six fixtures hold massive intensity for both Glasgow clubs, which has a knock-on effect on the tussle for Europe.

Hibs and Dundee United are level on points, trailing third-placed Motherwell by just two, while the Fir Park side boast a crucial match in hand.

But that fixture is against leaders Rangers and Paatelainen knows there will be many twists and turns in the weeks to come due to every team's need for points for differing reasons.

Asked if the title race going the distance keeps the top six competitive, he said: "Yeah, absolutely, that's what we want.

"The top six is interesting, very tough. Because it is so tight points-wise, win, lose or draw now it doesn't change anything.

"Every club from us, Motherwell and Dundee United still has a chance to qualify for the UEFA Cup.

"Motherwell have that game in hand and if they win it, they are in a really strong position. But that game is really difficult for them and we're hoping that's not the case.

"But even if the championship was won, I don't think the other team would throw in the towel and play half-heartedly."
