Celtic's Gary Caldwell and Rangers' David Weir have each been handed one-match bans by the Scottish Football Association for their misconduct at the end of the Old Firm derby.

After the final whistle of a hard-fought match at Parkhead which ended in a 2-1 win for Celtic, the two defenders squared up to each other on the pitch, and had to be called the referee Kenny Clark's room afterwards.

Caldwell will miss Saturday's SPL match at home to Aberdeen, while Weir will play no part in Sunday's Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone.

SFA disciplinary chief Drew Herbertson said: "It is the case that David Weir and Gary Caldwell are to be reported for violent conduct which means both will be suspended for the next match.''

The match had already seen Rangers' Carlos Cuellar sent off for saving Shunsuke Nakamura's shot on the line with his hand, before a clash between Rangers captain Barry Ferguson and Celtic's Stephen McManus sparked an on-pitch melee amongst the players at the end of the match.

There were also reports of a Rangers physiotherapist being struck by a coin thrown from the crowd while he treated an injured player, and the SFA are likely to investigate upon receiving the referee's match report.

The result means that Celtic are just a point behind Rangers, although they have played two more matches.
