Sunderland put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Hull City at the Stadium of Light.
Djibril Cisse scored the only goal of the game deep into injury time at the end of the first half, glancing home a Danny Collins flick on at the far post.
Two volleys past the post from George Boateng and a header wide from Caleb Folan were the best efforts Hull could muster as they failed to genuinely test &lsquokeeper Craig Gordon all afternoon, and they even received a let-off as Daryl Murphy smacked a left foot shot onto the post in the last attack of the game.
The result sees Sunderland leapfrog their opponents into 15th position, four points clear of the drop zone. Hull now slip to16th place.
Both sides cancelled eachother out in the early stages of a first half high on commitment but somewhat lacking in quality and incisive attacking play.
Cisse was the first to get the vocal home fans out of their seats, beating two men in a driving run at the centre of the Hull defence, before he was unceremoniously upended by Andy Dawson, while Geovanni narrowly failed to connect properly with a volley from the edge of the area at the other end.
The veteran Brazilian was at the hub of all of the visitors' best attacks, and he almost played in Manucho with a fine inswinging cross from the left wing, though the Angolan could not direct his header goalwards.
With defences prevailing and the clock ticking down it seemed we were destined to head into the break goalless, though the last attack of the half brought about the opening goal. Andy Reid whipped a pacy cross into the heart of the Hull area, and Collins managed to flick the ball on to the far post, where Cisse was on hand to head home.
Clearly buoyed by their goal, Sunderland enjoyed their best spell of the game at the start of the second half, with Cisse latching onto a Kenwyne Jones flick on, only to see his well-struck volley parried clear by Boaz Myhill.
Jones himself had the ball in the back of the net just two minutes later, though saw his close-range header justly ruled out for offside, before Cisse stung the palms of Myhill with an awkward, bouncing effort from wide on the right.
The unlikely figure of Boateng twice popped of for Hull on the edge of the area, with the Dutchman lashing right foot volleys wide on both occasions, before substitute Folan passed up his side's best chance of the game with a quarter of an hour remaining, planting a downward header just wide of the far post from Sam Ricketts's deep cross.
Despite their increasingly precarious plight Hull's late rally failed to produce any real chances of note, with Manucho's off-target header in injury-time the one exception. Murphy almost put the icing on the cake for Sunderland in the 94th minute, though his left foot effort came back off the far post, while Kieran Richardson blazed over from the rebound.

smart money is it cameron well it can be any of urs then cos u ain't smart at all u only won 4 at home all season so what makes u think u can win 3 out of 3 u are all deluded u'll be lucky to get 4 points from ur remaining games ,miracles don't happen in the real world
"Smart Money Cameron", It would appear that Paul N may have hit a nerve.Your are showing the classic symptoms of a desperate man with know arse in his trousers. The little list compiled below is that of the biggest bookmakers in the country(with a red and white logo incidentally) odds for the drop. And what did Granada Cameron use to tell you about the Mugs and the Bookies.
notice I'm being polite ^ and gracious as well
West Brom (No bets)
Middlesbrough 1/4
Newcastle 1/2
Hull City 11/8
Blackburn 4/1
Sunderland 9/2
Portsmouth 14/1
Bolton 28/1
Stoke City 28/1
I only hope that you get Three(3) points from the Pompey game(not one) otherwise the might stop accepting bets, like they have with WBA.
cameron w(anker) get a grip u no u going down nufc gonna b the next leeds pmsl
if Sunderland get 1 point from their remaining fixtures, that means Newcastle MUST win at least 2of their remaining fixtures AND get a draw to finish above us, I reckon you,ll get about 350/1 for that to happen. Face it you stupid inbread scum, your hanging on by your finger nails, and to get 2 wins from 5 games, you must be joking. you'veonly won 8 out of 33, do the maths
Paul N(ob),
I am always on here you fool, come to think of it you can't be much of a 'fan' as i have never come across you on here before!
West brom (away)- 1 point,
Chelsea (home) - lose.
There's Everton (home) - lose,
Bolton (away) - lose,
Pompey (away) - lose,
an awful lot of 'smart money' going on sunderland west brom and hull for the drop.
Sunderland to collect one point from remaining 5 points (if they are lucky). "Came-on"
That will be one more than the Doon Army manage to get then.
embarrassing thread for a man in your sad lonely predicament, can't blame you for logging onto a rivals team page though(Just to see what a win looks like)
Sad Geordie, very Sad indeed
erm, that's one point from remaining 5 games
sunderland to collect one point from remaining 5 points (if they are lucky).
city, come on for G'**** sake. there seems to be no get up and go now.
cant believe that 6 months ago you lot were in the top 6.
how the cookie crumbles eh Mr Brown. (your namesake seems to be going the same way)!
comment 31-"the only reason they are not sitting at the bottom of the table is because the others below them have been worse" Isnt ANY football division based on not only your results but the other teams in it regarding your position?City deserve to be where they are,as do the teams above and below.A disgrace?whys that then mate?look forward to your reply?...
Hull City's performance is so shabby, the only reason that they are not sitting at the bottom of the table is because others below them have been worse. What a disgrace that outfit is. If it's any side the deserves to be dropped, it's them.
Hull, from top 4 to bottom 5!not bad at all.
Brown "The goal was offside but I won't harp on about it" then why has he mentioned it in three independent interviews? The problems the Tigers have are all down to Brown. Idiotic January transfer decisions, losing King and shooting his mouth off is all the motivation teams need to beat Hull.
Hull City need to lose Brown. His self image "is bigger than the club" - nobody is bigger than the club but apparently Brown is?
Can't believe Hull didn't score today with Craig " i couldn't catch a cold" Gordon in goals, he is @#$%, always has been and alway's will be.
3.Great win for the lads today
I think it will put them in good stead for next weekend, where i think Kieran will score the winner(Players visiting old clubs and that, plus the fact of the irony that he was instrumental in keeping them up a couple of years ago). Anyway just looked at Hull and Boro's remaining fixtures and they are hard, very hard. I will not be surprised at all- if the bottom three are as follows
Hull
Boro
WBA
Personally I would like our Skunk neighbor's in the premier league season(the true derby) it's good for the metropolitan area as a whole and the competition is healthy, plus the fact the derby is World Famous.I don't see them beating Spurs, but they will eventually gain the sufficient points needed to stay up.
Sunderland are maybe going yo avoid the drop, but that's all they'll not win eff all!
Hull city at one time were in the top 4, now they're facing relegation. What a difference a 6 months make.
. . . . or at least they will be when this c(rappy) Yahoo sorts out its invalid criteria!!!!
. . . . Happy days are here again!!!!
