Lambert considering his future

Sun 18 May, 11:30 AM

Wycombe boss Paul Lambert revealed he is considering his future at the club after the League Two play-off semi-final defeat at Stockport.County won 1-0 at Edgeley Park courtesy of Liam Dickinson's outstanding individual goal in the seventh minute which sealed a 2-1 aggregate win.

And former Celtic midfielder Lambert insisted the uncertainty surrounding his position was purely down to football reasons and not the fact his wife still lives in Scotland.

"It has honestly got nothing to do with my wife living in Scotland," said an emotionally-drained Lambert.

"It's to do with football and I'll make a decision on those terms.

"The disappointment with the game outweighs anybody's individual thoughts."

Asked whether he would begin next season at Adams Park, Lambert replied: "I can't say. I'll have to wait and see in the next couple of days."

Lambert could not fault his players after they dug deep in vain in a desperate bid to find an equaliser.

He added: "The players gave me everything, which is all I could ask for.

"They've been great and I cannot criticise them or fault them for their effort.

"The fans were brilliant as well and they have been all season."

Ultimately, Dickinson's moment of early brilliance proved the difference and set Stockport into a Wembley final against north-west rivals Rochdale on May 26.

The 6ft 4in forward registered his 20th goal of the season in the seventh minute after Wycombe skipper Mike Williamson inexplicably allowed the ball to slip under his feet on the halfway line.

Dickinson, 22, showed blistering pace to race clear of the visiting defence and remarkable poise to slip the ball past goalkeeper Frank Fielding with a neat right-foot finish.

That put County ahead on aggregate and settled a disappointing encounter in which genuine goalscoring opportunities were scarce.

County boss Jim Gannon said: "It was a fantastic goal when you consider the pressure he was under.

"He showed power, pace and skill that I don't think you see at this level.

"He's a fantastic athlete, a fantastic footballer and I'm delighted for him because I knew he could be our hero today."

County will relish a derby clash against near neighbours Rochdale, who beat Darlington 5-4 on penalties earlier in the day, and in Dickinson they have a forward with the pace and skill to unlock the best defences in the division.

Signed from local non-league side Woodley Sports in 2005, the Salford-born striker has this season emerged as one of the most lethal marksmen in the bottom tier of the Football League.

Gannon said: "I'm looking forward to next weekend and it should be a great game between two sides who both play football."
