Uncapped St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis has been named in France's 30-man provisional squad for next month's European Championship, but there is no place for David Trezeguet.
Arsenal defenders Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna as well as Paris St Germain midfielder Jerome Rothen have also been left out by France coach Raymond Domenech ahead of the tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
But there is room for Bordeaux midfield anchorman Alou Diarra, Lyon right-back Francois Clerc and Les Gones team-mate Hatem Ben Arfa, the attacking left-winger.
The squad will be trimmed down to 23 names on May 28, the day after France's friendly match against Ecuador in Grenoble.
Gomis has been rewarded for his superb end to the season with St Etienne, which saw him score six goals in his last eight Ligue 1 games to help his team qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Gomis ended the campaign with 16 goals, making him the joint-third topscorer in France alongside Marseille's Djibril Cisse, who is also included in Domenech's 30-man group.
Juventus frontman Trezeguet was the second-top scorer in Serie A heading into the final round of fixtures in Italy but he does not figure in Domenech's list.
Over the past few months, Trezeguet has refused to play for France's 'A' team but did start for Les Bleus' senior side in their friendly against England in March.
PSG wideman Rothen, whose end to the season has been hampered by a calf injury, is also missing, with Domenech preferring the precocious Ben Arfa as the understudy to first-choice left-winger Florent Malouda.
And Clerc gets the nod over fellow right-back Sagna, who has also seen injury ruin the end of his impressive first season in the Premier League.
Domenech said earlier in the week he would be naming 29 players in his provisional squad, but he made a late decision to change it to 30.
Domenech will be keeping his fingers crossed none of the many Les Bleus players taking part in club competition finals over the next week pick up injuries.
Manchester United and Chelsea meet in the Champions League final on Wednesday, while the Coupe de France final between Lyon and Paris St Germain and the Coppa Italia final between Internazionale and Roma are both on Saturday.
"I would have preferred to have named the definitive list now but it is not possible," he said. "There are three finals this week.
"I know this (cutting the squad down to 23) will traumatise those who do not get into the final list.
"It has been difficult, with the consequences it has. It isn't easy. But in choosing between the individual and the squad as a whole, I have thought about the team."
As well as the Ecuador friendly, France also have warm-up matches against Paraguay in Toulouse on May 31 and Colombia in Paris on June 3.
France's opening group game at the Euros is against Romania on June 9. They then play Holland and Italy, who beat Les Bleus on penalties in the 2006 World Cup final.
