French Open - Madrid win lifts Federer confidence

Eurosport - Mon, 18 May 12:45:00 2009

Defeating clay-court king Rafael Nadal has convinced Roger Federer the pieces are falling into place to enable him to seize the Spaniard's French Open crown and win the only Grand Slam title that eludes him.

The Swiss world number two has lost to Nadal in the final at Roland Garros the past three years and fell to his 22-year-old rival in the semi-finals in 2005.

He said his 6-4 6-4 victory over number one Nadal in the Madrid Masters final on clay had come at the perfect time with the French Open starting in Paris at the end of the month.

"I think everything is falling into place. I kind of felt it coming the last few weeks," said the 27-year-old.

"This year it looked like other guys might be moving up but I always knew that I was going to get stronger week by week on clay.

"So it's a nice feeling and I'm very excited going into Paris now whereas maybe a couple of weeks ago I was still a little bit unsure about my game and not sure whether I could win the French and now that's changed."

Federer said Nadal was unlikely to be affected too much by only his fifth defeat on his favoured surface in 155 matches since the start of 2005.

"I snapped his streak at 81 a couple of years ago and it didn't really bother him too much," he said, referring to his victory over Nadal in the final of the 2007 Hamburg Masters.

"I don't think he's going to take any damage away from this. He's played so well in Monaco, Barcelona and Rome that this is probably the best clay-court season he's had.

"So I'm sure he's going to be rock solid in Paris again."

Speaking at a separate news conference later on Sunday, Nadal said the Madrid Open - a new clay event this year with faster courts than Paris that better suit Federer's game - could not be compared with the French Open.

"I don't think there is too much to analyse from this defeat," he said. "He broke my serve twice and that was that, I was on my way home. I don't think it will make any difference at Roland Garros."

  1. @ Peri - I’m really looking forward their clash on RG.. maybe it is "a different animal" but I believe in Novak 100 percent :-)

  2. Nadal did not play that well in the SF against Djokovic either. So I don't believe tiredness was the factor of losing his game against Federer. Nadal gave few reasons in different interviews.
But thinking of Federer; someone whos getting a grip on theire game after a down period might be very dangerous. Etiher a situation brakes, or makes someone. And Federer has been through a time of breaking. Now, time will tell if he really are getting stronger out of the situation. However, this is really good for the tennis sport. Nadal took away his winning streaks in Wimbledon, let's see if Federer will do the same in France. Bon Viaggio!!

  3. Igor, what you think is called arrogance, other, more knowledged people will call it honesty. Roger losing to djokovic on clay after he won 1st set very easily both times, then he handed victory to Novak with so many errors, like he could not see the height of net or the white lines. Roger will show at French, if he meet Djokovic, who is really the better player.

  4. @ carlos480bc you are right saying I don’t have enough respect for Federer - I don’t have because I can not have ! I lost respect for him in durin last year and more because of his arrogant behaviour, and statements he is giving - mostly when he is loosing, which I found unfair towards others. Such a great player should act different - otherwise his final chapter in tennis history can be a sad one. It’s on him of course to chose...
I can say, yes, he still has fuel for great victories, but only great thing in his victory over Nadal was Nadal lost final on clay, after i don’t know how many matches, and it supposed to be a sensation.. but if you think harder, it really is not after such a hard Semi Nadal had.. When Federer, or anyone else beats Nadal fair and square, then it will be real sensation ! This win can only boost Fed a little.. but is not enough I would say.. it shouldn’t be taken as a great sign from a sky.. he just don’t have too much chance against Novak, Nadal, even Murray on RG.. Murray is obstacle he just can not jump over, no matter surface, I’m sure ! Even I’m Novak`s fan, I think Fed has better chances against Novak, because both play more aggressive.

  5. some of the comments about the Federer win over Nadal were surprising. saying Nadal was tired. remember Nadal played a five set semifinal before going to the final to also play a five set final against Federer to win the australian open this year. and also remember Federer had lesser time than Nadal to prepare for the Madrid masters final. So please at least give credit to Federer for winning and dont give excuses. They are both great players but Federer played better

  6. Good luck to Roger and Rafa at the french open hope they both do well.
Will Murray get to the finals in his dreams maybe.

  7. Igor k,comment 119.I think most people do appreciate Djoko, what turns most people off is sickly biased hero worship. After Djoko lost to Nadal in Madrid you announced that Federer would lose easily in two sets, even if Nadal was injured or tired.Try to respect the talent of others,Federer has won more slams and been number one longer than everyone else on the tour put together, these are facts and should be respected.

  8. Nadal will hit back in the French Open!!! :D:D Congratulation Roger! This was your last victory!!;)

    From katrine_groa, on Tue 19 May 3:41PM
  9. Federer beated Nadal, because Nadal played earlier with Djokovic an egsausting match.I think the final of the RG shold bee between Nadal and Djokovic, because Novak is capable to play to the end fisicly and mentaly.

    From csaba017, on Tue 19 May 3:14PM
  10. It doen't matter whether Djokovic or Murray is in whose side of the draw, the final will be Federer vs Nadal. Two reasons: despite Murray's good and intelligent play and his recent conditioning, he still cannot play 5-setter at the highest level ON CLAY. Djokovic also seems to tighten up during RG especially when the tensions increase. Secondly, outside the victory, what I saw from Federer was an ability to change tactics two or three times during a match (he did it against Roddick and Nadal), and the slow return of his mental focus during matches. Who will win if they both meet? Only the Gods of Roland Garros know that, but it will be a pleasure to watch.

From Hotshot, on Tue 19 May 1:57PM
  11. Perhaps, you are right Yiannis p, the time will show who is right. For now, I will keep my opinion.

    From siskra83, on Tue 19 May 1:49PM
  12. Dear Tim (136), why somebody who is not Federer's (but Nadal's or Djokovic's fan) has to be with lack of intelligence or class?! Sorry, but you are wrong!!! I am not Federer's fan (and I do not like to be), but i have respect for him and for all his fans. Showing respect to somebody who do not share your opinion is the first thing that you have to learn, before you open your mouth

    From siskra83, on Tue 19 May 1:43PM
  13. Nadal is a simpler guy and i like that. And i do respe ct him of course, he's the number one in the world, only a fool wouldn't respe ct that.. But Federer's tennis is so much more beau tiful to watch, sorry. In that sense i dislike Rafa because he trumps beau ty with power...Plus I don't like how he takes ages to serve, I think it's a trick uncle Tony taught him in order for him to get some breathing space between all this running:)

From YiannisP, on Tue 19 May 1:42PM
  14. Jimmy, yes, I guess you could say I don't like Nadal:) But that's not on a personal level, he comes across to me as a very nice guy, probably more likeable than Federer! I don't care for some of the things Federer's does, like the special cardigan for example... not my style really.

From YiannisP, on Tue 19 May 1:41PM
  15. Siskra, Nadal's "mental strength and determination" as you say might be due to the fact he's only 22 actually! When he gets a bit older and starts thinking more about other things in life, he will probably lose this extreme focus :)

From YiannisP, on Tue 19 May 1:22PM
  16. You are right Jimmy (com. 135), I agree with your ever single word.

    From siskra83, on Tue 19 May 1:18PM
  17. Playing a tournament and being tired is regular part of the game. Anyone speaking about Nadal being tired is disregarding this fact. You have bunch of players in the draw with different paths towards the final, different oponents, different matches, different conditions on every other day. That's the trick. Nadal rested while Kohlschreiber walked off, Federer had to play 3 sets against Roddick. Nadal fought 3 sets with Djokovic and Federer had a rather easy match against Del Potro. He alsou could loose that too. Is Del Potro no dangerous? He just couldn't produce that game which Wawrinka used recently to eliminate Federer...

From risimko, on Tue 19 May 1:15PM
  18. Why is it that so MANY of Nadal's and Djokovic' fans seem to lack any intelligence or class ? Don't take my words for it , just try to read the nonesense they post on a daily basis !!

From Tim, on Tue 19 May 1:09PM
  19. You are right, Yannis P, they adapt to his game, but I expect he'll adapt his game too when the time comes, he is not stupid. If Federer can change and start using drop shots, Nadal will think of some answer. Nobody is unbeatable. But that's the beauty of tennis, full of surprises, constantly changing tactics and approaches, with the people on top chasing each other up (or down) the ranks. And especially interesting when there are three or four good players and you never know who is going to win. Otherwise it's plain boring. You don't seem to like Nadal, but I think he deserves respect and he certainly gets it, from all his rivals, so why not from us too.

From Jimmy, on Tue 19 May 1:07PM
  20. I am Rafa's fan, but not because he is the best, or he has not weaknesses, but because he is different and eyes catching. His mental strength, his determination, his will and only he is 22 y. You can like or hate him, but you cant be indifferent.
