Premier League - Newcastle appeal Bassong red

Eurosport - Mon, 18 May 15:56:00 2009

Newcastle have appealed against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal on Saturday.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Sebastien Bassong is sent off against Fulham - 0

The 22-year-old was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara. Bassong is set to miss the club's final game of the season at Aston Villa unless his appeal is upheld by an FA regulatory commission on Tuesday.

An FA statement said: "The FA has received a claim for wrongful dismissal from Newcastle United defender Sebastian Bassong. A regulatory commission will hear the claim on May 19."

It continued: "Bassong was shown a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity during Newcastle's match against Fulham on May 16.

Bassong was red-carded 60 minutes into a potentially pivotal game for the Magpies with his side trailing to Kamara's first-half strike.

The incident came just 10 minutes after Webb had chalked off a Mark Viduka header which would have levelled the scores and sent the Tyneside club to Villa Park sitting just outside the relegation zone rather than inside it.

Manager Alan Shearer is facing a major selection headache unless he wins his appeal, with Habib Beye struggling with a hamstring injury and strikers Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins both battling groin problems.

A draw against Villa would keep Newcastle in the top flight providing Hull lose at home to Manchester United, although they would have to win if the Tigers got a point and a victory for Phil Brown's men would ensure they finished above the Magpies regardless of what happens in the midlands.

  1. I would not feel sorry for te club if-when they go down this season, but I will feel sorry for the fans who knew it would happen if the pig owner Cashely did not get his act together and started managing it as a football team and not as a pure business that buys cheap players and sells good ones. Last time I checked what happened to cows being fed meat they got the Mad Cow Disease. so if you think you can make a football team running like a sports apparel outlet you get the consequence of your club falling to lower grades. Sorry Newcastle fans, you don't deserve Ashley as boss yet you are paying the consequences of his acts.

  9. Really sorry Carl had a bad day at school today. Plus I cannot resist it you muppets have shouted on for years about what a big club you are, seemingly that point seems to have dropped of these boards. Accept it your not a big club and like the rest of us we get on with it, not bleating on about red cards and disallowed goals.
The facts are straightforward you are @#$% !

  13. It was a definite sending off, not sure about the disallowed goal, and there's no way Kamara is offside when he gets the ball to score - he's behind the ball when it's passed to him.

  14. CAMERON W. You seem to be a little paranoid my little skunk.
Is it compulsory that I respond to everything you say ?
Did you start this thread ?
My point if you had half a brain is that the system is open to abuse. Look at Man U and the other top clubs they get away with it week in week out. The lessor teams do not ! Not rocket science pal but youv'e had a tough weekend so I will forgive you.
Sadly when your in the championship I wil not be able to pillorise you so please please keep logging on.

  19. It was a goal as what about the player in front of Nolan I feel its a case of why does Nolan have to move the player in front of him sure didn't
However it was a red clear last man and he held him then did a cheeky trip they should not worry about it, it seems to be adding to issues that don't need to be adding to get your gameplan early your team set now and get them gelling otherwise after a late over turning I feel will do more damage

  20. A win against Villa would be very nice please. If either Hull or Sunderland lose we'll be fine. I'd prefer it if Sunderland lost, but you can't have everything.
