Premier League - Newcastle appeal Bassong red

Eurosport - Mon, 18 May 15:56:00 2009

Newcastle have appealed against Sebastien Bassong's dismissal on Saturday.

2008-2009 Newcastle United Sebastien Bassong is sent off against Fulham - 0

The 22-year-old was shown a straight red card by referee Howard Webb after tangling with Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara. Bassong is set to miss the club's final game of the season at Aston Villa unless his appeal is upheld by an FA regulatory commission on Tuesday.

An FA statement said: "The FA has received a claim for wrongful dismissal from Newcastle United defender Sebastian Bassong. A regulatory commission will hear the claim on May 19."

It continued: "Bassong was shown a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity during Newcastle's match against Fulham on May 16.

Bassong was red-carded 60 minutes into a potentially pivotal game for the Magpies with his side trailing to Kamara's first-half strike.

The incident came just 10 minutes after Webb had chalked off a Mark Viduka header which would have levelled the scores and sent the Tyneside club to Villa Park sitting just outside the relegation zone rather than inside it.

Manager Alan Shearer is facing a major selection headache unless he wins his appeal, with Habib Beye struggling with a hamstring injury and strikers Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins both battling groin problems.

A draw against Villa would keep Newcastle in the top flight providing Hull lose at home to Manchester United, although they would have to win if the Tigers got a point and a victory for Phil Brown's men would ensure they finished above the Magpies regardless of what happens in the midlands.

instead of spouting you puerile, biased rubbish, why don't you comment on the 2 issues i remarked on - or is that too difficult for you, Play up Pompey!

I couldn't agree with you more leebann.
They are indeed "Clutching at straws"
but it would be no surprise if the muppets at the FA let him off with it !

We shall see tomorrow how much influence Mr.Shearer has on his chummies at the FA.

  3. Webb has definitely been influenced by discussions on both Setanta and MOTD with regards Nolan and that 'goal' - all i can say is that if you are going to disallow a goal for that, then EVERY single corner or set piece should result in a penalty as defenders are ALWAYS blocking attackers and wrapping their arms around them!!!
    Can somebody please comment!
Also can somebody please comment on Fulham's blatantly offside goal - Webb obviously doesn't know the rules of the game. The ball was ahead of Harper (the goalkeeper) and there was only S.Taylor between Kamara and the goal when the ball was passed forward to him . . . the rules state that there should be 2.
Can somebody please comment on this (overlooked) refereeing error!!
As for Bassong's red card; i am a Newcastle United fan and even i feel embarrassed that they have appealed!
It was a definite red card, however i do understand why they are doing it - they've got nothing to lose, only respect from other clubs and fans, and i believe we lost all that the day ashley took control. Oh yes, and the fact that we'll have to play Collicinni!!!
    As for you paulchappell82
show me one NUFC fan who claims the NUFC fans to be 'the best in the world', and i'll show you a winning lottery ticket for next week.

  4. The referee certainly got it wrong. But it`s to late now.
Newcastle did not manage to score in a game which they needed at least a point.
Now it is out of their hands...............even a win against Villa might not be enough.

  5. I think Shearer will be a good manager but he must learn from the better one's around. Fergy used to defend Keane who would think nothing of crippling opponents and wenger who just never seen it so it didn't happen?
I think Bassong's sending off was very dodgy but what chance has he got of an appeal when big Al said it was the correct decision

  6. Clutching at straws!!! Why on earth would the FA overturn a red card for fouling another player who would have otherwise been clean through on goal.

  7. There's still a decent chance Newcastle will stay up. If they can win at Villa or even get a draw then they will probably avoid the drop because it is almost a given that Hull will lose against the newly crowned champions. I know Man U have the CL final coming right after but I still think they will be too good for Hull who are dropping faster than Russell Brand's underpants.

    Oh John, Sour grapes anyone!!

Nolan has been doing that stunt for 5 years, it's only because of match of the day highlighting it that Refs now look for it. If he didn't stand there to block the keeper why did he stand there? Your just annoyed that he got caught cheating unlike when he did it against boro. As for the Red card, he denied a goalscoring opportunity. "Tangle of Legs" - How about the fact he tried to swap shirts for 5 seconds.

Blatent one-eyed view from "The best fans in the world"

    See you in the championship.

  9. shujaahmad2004, you really can't blame Boro getting relegated on Newcastle or refereeing decisions. They're going down because of their poor form throughout the season. Newcastle will too (to my great upset). There's no divine providence or Karma here. This is the harsh reallity of the premier league; you get what you deserve.

  10. Along with the Toon's woefull performances of course. I wish I supported a better team.

  11. I generally like Howard Webb as a ref and rate him way above the ridiculous likes of Rob Styles etc... Very unhappy about the Viduka Goal being disallowed though. There was nothing wrong with it and the decision has all but relegated the Toon. Gutted.

What goes around, comes around! 2 dodgy goals against boro (one foul & one offside) gave newcastle a lifeline & relegated boro. Now, newcastle have a goal disallowed & it looks like they will go down so the overall balance has been corrected.

    From shujaahmad2004, on Mon 18 May 4:28PM
  13. Mr Webb Hang your head in shame, disallowing a perfectly good goal,if any foul commited it was by the keeper on Nolan. Referees should be back to expences only as the standards of refereeing are rubbish since they made them full time overpaid parts of the football circus. The red card for Bassong was also harsh for a tangle of legs.
Makes you wonder if Webby has had a bet on Toon to be relagated !!!!!!
