Premier League - Team news: McCartney back

Eurosport - Mon, 18 May 19:35:00 2009

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia is urging his players to take the chance to confirm their Premier League status with a win at Portsmouth.

The Black Cats remain in 16th place in the table after Saturday's fixtures, but are only a point clear of Hull in 17th and one more better off than derby rivals Newcastle inside the drop zone.

Sbragia said: "We know what we have got to do. We have had nine or 10 weeks to do it and we haven't quite done it."

He added: "But the Bolton game, we definitely, without a doubt, got a good performance and we needed that, to be truthful with you.

"It was a good, valuable point as well and if we had our shooting boots on, we might possibly have got a win.

"We knew it was going to be very difficult, but we surprised a few with how we dealt with the situation."

Sunderland turned in their best performance for some time at the Reebok Stadium, but were unable to make the most of the chances they created and were ultimately indebted to a fine late save by goalkeeper Marton Fulop which secured a point.

They will have to produce a similar performance at Pompey if they are to keep Paul Hart's side, and in particular, England striker Peter Crouch, at bay.

Sbragia said: "He is a good player, a very good player. I can remember at Liverpool when I was at Bolton, he scored two terrific goals against us and he was a handful.

"If you look at the Portsmouth team, he [Hart] has gone for the physical side as well. He has brought in [Younes] Kaboul and [Hermann] Hreidarsson has come in a left-back, so they are a very tall team."

Sunderland full-back George McCartney could return after missing the last six games with a calf injury.

Kenwyne Jones and Kieran Richardson (both ankle), and Teemu Tainio (knee), are all expected to shake off minor knocks, but Craig Gordon (knee) and Nyron Nosworthy (hamstring) will not play again this season.

Hart may rest some senior men for the visit of Sunderland after his side's safety was secured without playing on Saturday.

Defender Kaboul was substituted in last Saturday's defeat at Blackburn after missing three games with a thigh injury, while striker Crouch has started all 46 games this season and could benefit from a rest - or at least a front-line partner in veteran Kanu.

Noe Pamarot is available again after suspension while on-loan Armand Traore has recovered from a groin problem and could make his first appearance since Hart took charge in February.

  1. what has gone wrong? its easy spragia is an excellent coach but is not management material,i feel sorry for him, where has all the good buys gone that cost us £80 million,a keeper that cost us too much does not command his area and now for some reason wont play again this season or possibly for sunderland,we are once again in a big hole, where is healy?niall quinn must now be wondering why he even bothered we will always be a moderate team, even hull and wba look as if they were fighting for everything but not us? bring back the old pay system every player was on a low salary and earned there large wages by win and goal bonuses then they had to play to earn? not now they earn for being a load of @#$% if we did that at our place of work we would not last 5 minutes come on somebody have the balls to make a stanceb on this and bring our game back into a desirable sport with people willing to win

  2. Here we go again,
In the doldroms as usual. A team full of championship players what else do Sunderland expect.
The poor fans are the losers here.
All three management teams of the North East clubs should hang their heads in shame after this debacle.
Which top class player in their right minds would want to come and play for this shower?
God Bless North East football. It used to great.

  6. cisse is the top scorer , i think maybe cisse and healy or even cisse and jones but by not playin cisse can shoot yourself in the foot. put cisse on let jones hold the ball and run with it and have him or richardson to cross the ball so cisse can strike or nod the ball in the back of the net. why get a player with experience and who can score goals and not play him?

  7. Cisse won't work as a lone front man though Jay, He can't hold the ball up and bring the attacking midfilders into play like Jones can. Cisse is all about running with his head down and blazing in shots, won't work with the planned tactics
