Premier League - Team of the week: Anelka shines

Eurosport - Mon, 18 May 14:43:00 2009

Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka scored his 18th Premier League goal of the season in his side's 2-0 victory over Blackburn.

2008-2009 Chelsea Nicolas Anelka - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the Team of the Week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-5-1)

Chelsea's Anelka was razor sharp against Blackburn and deservedly wins the player of the week award. Hull City's Craig Fagan is also rewarded for finding the onion bag and we've deployed him as a lone striker. At the back, Bolton are represented by Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal, who made some fine saves against Hull, and full-back Gretar Steinsson. It's no surprise to see Steven Gerrard in the midfield, after the the Liverpool midfielder once again drove his team to victory against relegated West Brom. Middlesbrough's veteran midfielder Tuncay Sanli deserves mention for a fine performance in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

GK: Jussi Jaaskelainen (Bolton) - 38

RB: Gretar Steinsson (Bolton) - 35

CB: Brede Hangeland (Fulham) - 38

CB: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) - 36

LB: Ashley Cole (Chelsea) - 38

RM: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea) - 41

CM: Tuncay Sanli (Middlesbrough) - 39

CM: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa) - 36

CM: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) - 39

LM: Steven Pienaar (Everton) - 40

FW: Craig Fagan (Hull City) - 37

FLOPS OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Newcastle's Sebastian Bassong pays the price for his red card against Fulham with a spot in the FOTW XI. He should feel at home with three team-mates to keep him company - Steve Harper , Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutierrez. Manchester City's Elano takes the wooden spoon, however, after a woefully ineffective performance against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

GK: Steve Harper (Newcastle United) - 30

RB: Micah Richards (Manchester City) - 27

CB: Sebastian Bassong (Newcastle United) - 21

CB: Shelton Martis (West Bromwich Albion) - 23

LB: Jlloyd Samuel (Bolton) - 27

LM: Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle United) - 20

FW: Manucho (Hull City) - 21

FW: Roman Pavlyuchencko (Tottenham) - 22

TEAM OF THE SEASON (minimum 19 starts)

There are no changes to report in the TOTS after this, the penultimate week of the Premier League season. Liverpool's superhuman midfielder Gerrard appears set to add the much coveted Eurosport-Yahoo! Player of the Season award to the Football Writers gong he picked up recently.

GK: Shay Given (Manchester City) - 33.78 average

RB: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth) - 32.43

CB: Brede Hangeland (Fulham) - 33.66

CB: Martin Laursen (Aston Villa) - 33.84

LB: Leighton Baines (Everton) - 31.72

RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) - 33.42

CM: Xabi Alonso (Liverpool) - 34.88

CM: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) - 35.76

LM: Ashley Young (Aston Villa) - 32.9

FW: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - 34.76

FW: Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - 35.05

FLOPS OF THE SEASON (minimum 19 starts)

Newcastle's Nolan is making a late run for the FOTS. The former Bolton man replaces Zoltan Gera in midfield, but the big story next week could involve his team-mate Michael Owen. If Owen recovers suitably to start against Aston Villa, and has a shocker, he could yet replace Afonso Alves in attack.

GK: Scott Carson (West Brom) average 29.91

RB: Andre Ooijer (Blackburn) - 28.66

CB: Carlos Cuellar (Aston Villa) - 28.55

CB: Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle) - 27.88

LB: Jose Enrique (Newcastle) - 26.67

RM: Keith Andrews (Blackburn) - 28.23

LM: Charles N'Zogbia (Wigan) - 28.92

FW: Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham) - 27.29

FW: Afonso Alves (Middlesbrough) - 27.96

  2. What makes Liverpool the best team in the league? Cos they beat Man Utd twice? Man City did that last season. There are 38 games in a season and if you can not win enough games then you do not deserve to win the league. And before any Liverpool fans start talking about Man Utd winning games in the last minute of the game how many times did Liverpool do that this year? I ain't a Manc but Man Utd were the best team in the league this year. 3 trophies and a champions league final. How can you argue with that?
