Tomas Berdych has moved back up into the top 20 in the latest edition of the ATP rankings.
Czech Berdych, who won in Munich two weeks ago, reached the second round of the Madrid Masters before retiring with a left leg injury against world number five Juan Martin Del Potro.
But with Marat Safin suffering his third straight first-round defeat - to France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - the Russian drops two places to 22 while Berdych jumps the same distance in the opposite direction.
1. Rafael Nadal, Spain
Last Week's Result: The Spanish left-hander reached the final at the Madrid Masters where he lost to rival Roger Federer 6-4 6-4 in the final. The previous round he saved three match points in the longest three-set singles match on the ATP Tour in the Open Era, prevailing in four hours and three minutes over Novak Djokovic 3-6 7-6(5) 7-6(9). The loss ended a 33-match winning streak on clay going back to May 7, 2008. It was also only his second loss in a clay final in his career (25-2), both coming to Federer. Has a 150-5 clay mark since 2005.
Year in Review: The 22-year-old Mallorca native has won an ATP World Tour-best five titles, reached another final and advanced to two quarter-finals in his first eight tournaments of the season en route to a 38-3 record. He's now won at least five titles the past five years. Captured his sixth career Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, his first on hard courts, with a five-set victory over rival Federer. In his semi-final victory over countryman Fernando Verdasco, won a tournament record five hours and 14 minutes battle in five sets. He became the first Spaniard to win the Australian title and third player at age 22-under to win three of four Grand Slam titles, joining Connors and Sampras. Also the first player to win Aussie Open title winning five-set semi-final and final matches since Mats Wilander in 1988. In March, collected his 13th career Masters title in Indian Wells for the second time in three years with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Andy Murray. He saved the most match points (five) in his career in the fourth round against David Nalbandian, all coming in the second set before prevailing 6-0 in the final set. In addition to Murray, his other top 10 wins came over Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals and Andy Roddick in the semis. He followed with the quarter-finals at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Led 3-0 (two breaks) in the third set against Del Potro before losing in a tie-break. In mid-February, reached third career final (1-2) in Rotterdam and injured his right knee in three-set loss to Murray. Withdrew from Dubai but returned for first round Davis Cup tie against Serbia, winning both of his singles matches, over Janko Tipsarevic and Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Has won 12 straight Davis Cup matches since losing in his debut five years ago. Opened his clay court campaign with a 6-3 2-6 6-1 victory over Djokovic in the Monte-Carlo Masters. It was a record fifth straight crown in Monte-Carlo. He followed by winning his fifth straight Barcelona title. He improved to 25-1 in clay court finals with a 7-6(2) 6-2 victory over Djokovic in the Rome Masters final. It was the Spaniard's 15th career Masters title, second only to Andre Agassi (17), and record fourth title in Rome as he increased his clay court winning streak to 30 matches since his last loss to countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round of Rome in 2008.

2. Roger Federer, Switzerland
Last Week's Result: The world number two broke nearly a seven-month title drought by earning his 15th career Masters title in Madrid, capped off by a 6-4 6-4 victory over rival Nadal. Broke a five-match losing streak to the Spaniard with his 58th career title in his 80th final. Has won at least one title for nine straight years. Along the way also beat number 16-ranked Blake, number six Andy Roddick and number five Juan Martin Del Potro. Only lost his serve twice in 55 games.
Year in Review: The 27-year-old Swiss star is looking for his first title going into Madrid after compiling a 21-6 match record in his first six tournaments. He opened the first month with a semi-final in Doha (l. to Murray) and followed with runner-up at the Australian Open, falling to rival Nadal in five sets. It was his first loss in a Grand Slam hard court final (8-1) and he fell short of tying Pete Sampras' all-time record of 14 Slam titles (13-5 in finals). He then withdrew from Dubai and first round Davis Cup tie against the US with a back injury. Returned from a six-week lay-off due and advanced to the semi-finals in Indian Wells, defeating Fernando Gonzalez and Fernando Verdasco before losing to Murray for the fourth straight time. Followed with a 3-6 6-2 6-3 loss to Djokovic in the quarter-finals at the Miami Masters. He opened his clay court campaign at the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing in the third round to countryman Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4 7-5. It was his first loss to a countryman since Marc Rosset in 2000. He reached the semi-finals in Rome, losing to Djokovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 (after holding a 3-1 lead in the second and third sets). It was his fifth loss in a decisive set (third or fifth set) this season and has a 3-5 record in those matches. Married long-time girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec in his hometown of Basel on April 11.

3. Andy Murray, Great Britain
Last Week's Result: The 22-year-old Scot reached the quarter-finals in Madrid, losing to world number five Del Potro 7-6(4) 6-3.
Year in Review: The British star moved up to a career-high number three this week (ahead of Djokovic) and he is off to a career-best 29-4 start, including an 8-2 mark against top 10 opponents (both losses coming to Nadal). In his first eight tournaments, he's won three titles and reached another final. He opened the season by defending his title in Doha with back-to-back wins over Federer (semi-finals) and Roddick (final). Held serve 47 of 50 games throughout the tournament. Then followed with a fourth round showing at the Australian Open where he lost to Spaniard Verdasco for first time (5-1) in five sets. In February, defeated Nadal in three sets in Rotterdam final to capture his 10th title of his career. Two weeks later advanced to the quarter-finals in Dubai where he withdrew due to a virus against Richard Gasquet. Also pulled out of first round Davis Cup European zone home tie against Ukraine. He returned in March to reach the final at the Indian Wells Masters, falling to Nadal 6-1 6-2. En route to the title match, beat Tommy Robredo in the fourth round and Federer in the semi-finals for the fourth consecutive time since losing in last year's US Open final. Followed by capturing his third title of the season at the Miami Masters with his third career Masters crown over Djokovic 6-2 7-5. He became the first British player in the tournament's 25-year history to win the title. In his season clay court debut, he reached his first career semi-final on clay at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, defeating Nikolay Davydenko in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champ Nadal 6-2 7-6(4). He suffered his earliest loss of the season as he fell 1-6 6-3 7-5 in the opening round (after a bye) to Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco in Rome.

4. Novak Djokovic, Serbia
Last Week's Result: The Belgrade native reached the semi-finals in Madrid where he lost to Nadal 3-6 7-6(5) 7-6(9), after holding three match points in the final set tie-break. The four hour and three minute match was the longest three-set singles match on the ATP Tour in the Open Era.
Year in Review: The 21-year-old Serb has a 34-10 match record on the season and 2-3 in finals. He has reached the final in his past four tournaments (Miami, Monte-Carlo, Rome, Belgrade). He picked up his first title of the year on February 28 in Dubai by defeating Spaniard David Ferrer. In the first month of action he advanced to the semi-finals in Sydney (l. to Jarkko Nieminen) and followed with a quarter-final at the Australian Open where he retired against Roddick due to heat illness. He returned to action in Marseille and lost to eventual champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals. Played in first round Davis Cup tie against 2008 champions Spain and lost to Ferrer and Nadal. In March, came in as defending champion at the Indian Wells Masters and lost in the quarter-finals to Roddick 6-3 6-2. Followed by reaching his second final of the season at the Miami Masters where he defeated Federer in the semi-finals before falling to Murray 6-2 7-5. The Monte-Carlo resident opened his clay court campaign by reaching the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters with three consecutive three-set wins before losing to Nadal 6-3 2-6 6-1. It was his second straight runner-up in a Masters tournament. Continued his fine form by reaching the final at Rome Masters where he beat Federer in the semi-finals before losing to Nadal 7-6(2) 6-2. Captured his hometown title in the inaugural Serbia Open, defeating Polish lucky loser Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 7-6 to capture his second ATP World Tour title of the season.

5. Juan Martin del Potro, Argentina
Last Week's Result: The towering Argentine reached his second Masters semi-final of the season in Madrid where he beat Stanislas Wawrinka and Murray in the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champion Roger Federer 6-3 6-4.
Year in Review: The youngest player in the top 10 is off to a career-best 18-5 start, reaching the quarter-finals or better in his first six tournaments. He began the season by capturing his fifth career title in Auckland. He followed by advancing to his second straight Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. Jumped from ninth to sixth after Auckland title on January 19. The top South American also advanced to back-to-back quarter-finals in San Jose and Memphis. In March, reached the quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Masters where he won three matches before falling to eventual champion Nadal 6-2 6-4. He then advanced to his first semi-final at the Miami Masters where he posted the biggest win of his career over Nadal in the quarter-finals. Trailed 3-0 (two breaks) in the third set before winning in a tie-break for his first win in five meetings against Nadal. Afterwards, moved to a career-high world number five on April 6. He lost his opening round clay court match (after a bye) to Ivan Ljubicic in three sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters then followed with a quarter-final showing in Rome.

6. Andy Roddick, United States
Last Week's Result: The top American made his season clay court debut in Madrid and beat former world number two Tommy Haas in his opening round
Year in Review: The Austin, Texas resident has a 26-5 record, tied for fourth-most match wins on the ATP World Tour. He opened the season by reaching the final in Doha and advancing to his fourth semi-final at the Australian Open. Continued success in February with semi-final in San Jose and title in Memphis. Improved his title streak to nine consecutive years (since 2001) with his 27th career title, third-most among active players. He led the US to a 4-1 first round Davis Cup victory over the Federer-less Switzerland squad with straight-set wins over Marco Chiudinelli and Wawrinka. He faced only one break point in six sets of action en route to becoming the second most successful player in US Davis Cup history with 31 match wins (trailing only John McEnroe - 41). Has a 21-2 career record at home in Davis Cup play. In March, advanced to the semi-finals for the third time at the Indian Wells Masters where he defeated Ferrer in the fourth round and defending champion Djokovic in the quarter-finals before falling to eventual winner Nadal 6-4 7-6(4). The top American then reached the quarter-finals at the Miami Masters with a win over Gael Monfils in the fourth round before falling in three sets to Federer. 7. Gilles Simon, France
Last Week's Result: The 24-year-old lost in the third round in Madrid to Ivan Ljubicic in three sets.
Year in Review: The top Frenchman has compiled a 15-11 record and advanced to the quarter-finals or better in three times this season. In January reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. Then lost in the second round at Rotterdam before reaching back-to-back semi-finals in Marseille and Dubai. He had a tough Davis Cup debut against the Czech Republic, losing to Tomas Berdych and Stepanek in France's 3-2 first round loss in Ostrava. Of the six sets he lost, four came in tie-breaks. In March he reached the third round at the Indian Wells Masters with a three-set win over Yen-Hsun Lu before losing to Ljubicic 6-3 7-6(3). At the Miami Masters, the French native reached the fourth round with wins over former Lleyton Hewitt and Rainer Schuettler before losing to countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets. 8. Fernando Verdasco, Spain
Last Week's Result: The Madrid native performed well in his hometown by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time, losing to countryman Nadal 6-4 7-5.
Year in Review: The Spanish left-hander is off to a career-best 21-7 start and he reached a career-high number seven on April 20. Has advanced to the quarter-finals or better in all seven tournaments. He opened the first month of the season winning nine of 11 matches, highlighted by his first hard court final in Brisbane. Then followed with a career-best semi-final showing at Australian Open. Posted back-to-back wins over Murray in five sets in fourth round and Tsonga in quarter-finals before falling in an epic five-set marathon to Nadal. 9. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, France
Last Week's Result: The 23-year-old Frenchman lost in the second round in Madrid, beating Marat Safin before losing to Ljubicic in straight sets.
Year in Review: The Frenchman has advanced to the quarter-finals or better in seven of nine tournaments this season en route to a 25-6 match record, which is sixth on the ATP World Tour. Last year he didn't win his 25th match until mid-October in Madrid. Has already captured titles in Johannesburg and Marseille in the first two months. Made his second appearance in Davis Cup play and accounted for France's two points in 3-2 loss to Czech Republic with singles wins over Stepanek and Jan Hernych in dead rubber. In mid-March, reached the third round at the Indian Wells Masters, defeating Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili in his opening match before falling to Igor Andreev. Followed with a quarter-final showing at the Miami Masters, defeating countryman Simon in three sets before falling to eventual finalist Djokovic. Last Week's Result: The 27-year-old Russian reached the third round in Madrid, winning both matches in straight sets before withdrawing against Roddick due to a leg injury.
Year in Review: The top Russian has played in only five tournaments this year (7-3 record) due to the heel injury he suffered in the first week in Chennai where he withdrew from his second round match. Also withdrew from Indian Wells and the Miami Masters where he captured the title last year due to a left heel injury. Withdrew from Australian Open, breaking a streak of 29 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments played (since 2001 US Open). Returned to action one month later in Rotterdam and lost in the second round. After a two-month absence due to a left heel injury, returned in mid-April to reach the quarter-finals at the Monte Carlo Masters, defeating Nalbandian before losing to Murray 7-6(1) 6-4. Followed with semi-finals in Barcelona, posting back-to-back three set wins over Feliciano Lopez and Radek Stepanek before losing to eventual champion Nadal. Fell out of the top 10 on April 27 for the first time since May 23 2005. He was upset in the opening round (after a bye) in Rome by top Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-5, 7-6. Last Week's Result: The 28-year-old Chilean withdrew for the second straight week (Munich, Madrid) due to an ankle injury.
Year in Review: The top Chilean has a 17-5 match record on the season. He reached the fourth round at the Australian Open after defeating Gasquet 12-10 in the fifth set. Then repeated his title on home soil in Vina del Mar and for fourth time in his career. Withdrew from first round Davis Cup tie against Croatia due to back injury. Returned in March to reach the fourth round at the Indian Wells Masters with wins over Hewitt and James Blake before losing to Federer in three sets. Year in Review: The top Croat is ranked a career-high number 15 and he's off to a career-best 21-6 start with titles in Chennai and Zagreb.He also advanced to the fourth round at the Australian Open for the second straight year and the quarter-finals in Dubai. In first round Davis Cup play, helped his country to a 5-0 victory over visiting Chile by winning singles match and doubles match. Croatia will host the US in the quarter-final in July. In March, reached the third round at the Indian Wells Masters with a win over Steve Darcis before losing to Robredo 7-5 7-6(2). He then reached the third round for the second straight tournament at the Miami Masters with a win over Amer Delic before losing to Ferrer in three sets. He opened his clay court season with a second round exit at the Monte Carlo Masters. He reached the third round in Rome, losing to Argentine qualifier Monaco 6-4 6-4 and followed with the quarter-finals in Munich, losing to Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in three sets.

14. David Ferrer, Spain
Last Week's Result: The 27-year-old Spaniard lost in the second round for the second straight week in Madrid to Argentine Monaco 6-4 6-4.
Year in Review: The Spaniard has compiled a 23-10 match record, advancing to the semi-finals or better in four of his first 10 tournaments. He opened with a semi-final in Auckland before suffering third round exit at Australian Open. Then advanced to the semi-finals in Johannesburg at the start of February and later that month reached his 13th career final in Dubai. In first round Davis Cup tie against Serbia, helped his country to a 4-1 victory with wins over Djokovic in opener and Viktor Troicki in dead rubber to close the tie. Spain will host Germany in the quarter-finals in July. In mid-March, reached the fourth round at the Indian Wells Masters with wins over Todd Widom and Chardy before losing to Roddick in three sets. He then reached the fourth round at the Miami Masters with back-to-back three-set wins over John Isner and Marin Cilic before losing to Del Potro. Reached the third round at the Monte Carlo Masters before losing to countryman Verdasco 6-2 6-1. Followed by reaching his second final of the season in Barcelona, falling to Nadal in a repeat of last year's title match. 15. David Nalbandian, Argentina
Last Week's Result: Did not play - underwent hip surgery on May 13 in Spain and is expected to be sidelined three to four months.
Year in Review: The Argentine has a 14-6 match record on the season. He opened the season by capturing an title for the fifth consecutive year, in Sydney. Overall it was his 10th career title. He fell to Lu in the second round at the Australian Open. In February, advanced to the semi-finals in Buenos Aires and following week in Acapulco was upset by Austrian qualifier Daniel Koellerer in the first round. In mid-March, reached the fourth round at the Indian Wells Masters with wins over Robert Kendrick and Troicki before falling in three sets to eventual champion Nadal 3-6 7-6(5) 6-0 in two hours and 55 minutes. Held five match points in the second set but couldn't convert. Then suffered a surprise opening round loss to Serb Troicki 6-1 6-3 at the Miami Masters. In his European tournament opener, won back-to-back three set matches over Paul-Henri Mathieu and Marcel Granollers before losing to Nikolay Davydenko in three sets in the third round at the Monte Carlo Masters. He followed with a quarter-final showing in Barcelona but a right hip injury forced the Argentine to withdraw prior to a scheduled showdown with Nadal. e withdrew from Rome due to hip injury. Lost in the first round in Estoril to Chilean Paul Capdeville 6-2 6-2 and then announced afterwards he was to undergo hip surgery.

16. James Blake, United States
Last Week's Result: The 29-year-old American continued his clay-court success by reaching the third round in Madrid, losing to eventual champion Federer 6-2 6-4.
Year in Review: The American has compiled a 9-8 record on the season and since opening with a 6-2 record, has struggle with a 3-6 mark. Opened with a fourth round at the Australian Open, semi-final in San Jose and a pair of third round exits in Indian Wells and Miami. Helped the US to a 4-1 first round Davis Cup victory over Switzerland in Birmingham, Alabama by defeating Marco Chiudinelli in dead rubber. Lost to Wawrinka in four sets in the opening rubber. At the Indian Wells Masters, posted a three-set win over Jarkko Nieminen before losing to Gonzalez 7-5 6-1. Reached the third round at the Miami Masters, defeating Julien Benneteau 6-4 6-4, before exiting to Berdych 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3. He came in as the top seed into his first clay court tournament of the season in Houston and lost to former Argentine top 10 Guillermo Canas 6-4 6-4 in the first round. Made his European season clay debut in Rome and lost to Romanian qualifier Victor Crivoi in the first round. He then reached his second career clay court final in Estoril, defeating Davydenko in the semi-finals in three sets before falling in the final to Spaniard Albert Montanes in three sets (after holding two match points in the second set).

17. Tommy Robredo, Spain
Last Week's Result: The Spaniard reached the third round in Madrid, falling to Murray 7-5 6-1.
Year in Review: The 26-year-old Spaniard has jumped off to a career-best 26-9 start highlighted by back-to-back clay court titles in Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires. Last year he didn't win his 26th match until July 13 in Bastad. He compiled a 12-match winning streak and won 14 of 16 matches on clay during the four week Latin American circuit. In January, reached the second round in Sydney and fourth round at the Australian Open. Played in Davis Cup doubles match and lost to Troicki-Zimonjic although Spain beat Serbia 4-1. In mid-March, advanced to the fourth round at the Indian Wells Masters with wins over Kunitsyn and Cilic before retiring with a right wrist injury against Murray in the second set. Then followed with a third round at the Miami Masters where he beat Hernych in the opening round match before getting upset by Taylor Dent in the third round. In his first European clay court event, reached the second round at the Monte Carlo Masters. He then advanced to the quarter-finals in Barcelona, falling to Ferrer. He followed with a third round showing in Rome, falling to eventual finalist Novak Djokovic 6-1 6-1. Won two tie-break sets in his first two matches and is 8-0 on the season in tie-break sets Has a 9-0 tie-break sets record on the year.

18. Stanislas Wawrinka, Switzerland
Last Week's Result: The Swiss lost in the third round in Madrid to Del Potro in three sets.
Year in Review: The Swiss native has a 14-8 record on the season. He opened with a first round exit in Chennai and followed with third round at the Australian Open. He accounted for his country's lone point in a 4-1 first round Davis Cup loss to the US, defeating James Blake in the first rubber. Year in Review: At 30, he is the oldest player in the top 20 ATP Rankings. One of four players to reach at least three finals this year, winning titles in Brisbane and San Jose and reaching the final in Memphis. He is off to a personal-best 24-9 start and last year he didn't win his 24th match until the first round at Wimbledon in late June. He won his first two career titles in a span of 152 tournaments and this year won twice in his first four outings. He clinched his country's 3-2 first round Davis Cup victory over France by defeating Simon. Also won doubles match over Gasquet-Llodra and lost second singles rubber to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. There are only two great players in tennis at the moment: Nadal and Federer. The players that have potentials to be great players are Verdasco and Tsonga. That's it. Muray, Rodick and Djocovic willl always be "almost there".

interesting stats for the top 5, nadal 41 matches so far, fed 27, murray 33, djoko 44 and del potro 23. hmmm definitely a pattern with rafa and nole with murray close ish behind but the two who seem to be well pacing it are fed and del potro, wonder whether this will tell later on in the season, how long can rafa and djoko keep up this pace and we arent even half way through the season.
great news for berdych good to see him back in the top 20.
