Barcelona have secured the European Power Rankings title, knocking Manchester United off the top on the final day of the season.

The Catalans' 4-0 win against Real Valladolid not only brought the Liga championship to the Camp Nou; it also saw them sneak in front of Manchester United by the smallest possible margin.

With just one match remaining in the European club season, fourth-placed Internazionale cannot improve their position even if they win the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Despite their shock defeat to Inter in the Champions League semi-finals Barca romped to a massive 99-point haul in La Liga, enough to see off United who ended the season without major silverware despite decent campaigns in the Premier and Champions Leagues.

Real Madrid had to settle for second best in Spain despite clocking up a massive 96 points, and come in third in this season's rankings.

Perhaps surprisingly, Bordeaux cling on to a top-five position despite a dramatic late-season slump - eight wins in 10 Champions League matches gave them the highest European football rating of any team.

HOW IT WORKS

Scores are based on points per game in domestic league, Champions League and Europa League games.

Domestic points per game are multiplied by the league coefficient - either 3.5, 4, 4.5 or 5 - with teams in stronger leagues getting more credit.

League coefficients:

5 - England, Italy, Spain.

4.5 - Germany, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Russia.

4 - Belgium, Greece, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Scotland, Romania.

3.5 - Cyprus, Switzerland, Israel, Denmark, Austria.

Champions League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 5. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.

Europa League victories are counted as three points for a win. They are all multiplied by a coefficient of 4. Matches in the group stage and beyond are counted.

All teams relegated from Champions League to Europa League have had their formulas adjusted to reflect the amount they have gained or lost in Europe since then.

Example: Barcelona

99 points from 38 Premier League games = 2.61 (2.6053) points per game

Multiplied by league coefficient of 5 - 2.61 x 5 = 13.03 (13.0263)

22 points from 12 Champions League game = 1.83 (1.8333) points per game.

Multiplied by Champions League coefficient of five - 1.83 x 5 = 9.17 (9.1667)

Total score = 13.03 + 9.17 = 22.19 (22.1930)

    But the problem with this Power ranking is­ that the scope used is too narrow. Other competitions­ should have been considered like FA Cup in England,­ likewise other cups in other European countries. If­ this was considered, forget it, Man U will be trailing­ Chelsea at the back. They might even be in number one­ or two with Inter.

  8. in EPL, man u has 85 points from 38 matches. when u­ divide 85 by 38 we have 2.24 then multiply dis by 5,­ we get 11.18 . In CL man u has 22 points from 10­ matches. when we divide 22 by 10 we have 2.2 then­ multiply dis by 5, we have 11.0. sum= 11.18+11.00 =­ 22.18. similarly, Chelsea has 86 points from 38­ matches, do d same as above: 86/38 =11.26x5= 11.32 in­ CL Chelsea has 14points from 8 matches. 14 divide 8 =­ 1.75X5 =8.75 Sum= 11.32+8.75 = 20.07. so man u has­ 22.18 while chelsea has 20.07, so winning chapioms­ league or premiership does not make d team first in­ power ranking. there is no sentiment here.   10. Why this list is final before the CL final is beyond­ me. Inter wins the Treble, yet finishes behind 2­ runner-ups(in their own leagues) that didn't reach­ the quarter finals in CL? You might need to change­ the weight in your calculations.
