The story of the US Grand Prix was that McLaren Mercedes started at the front and pulled out an advantage over rivals Ferrari, a gap they would maintain to the chequered flag on lap 73.

However, in terms of pure pace there really wasn’t much in it around the 4.192KM circuit, with less than three-tenths of a second covering the fastest five drivers.

Kimi Raikkonen was actually fastest over a single lap during the Grand Prix, recording a 1:13.117s best as he chased down team-mate Felipe Massa who ran in third position.

Just 0.035s separated the McLaren duo as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso set their best laps just before their first pit stop. Nick Heidfeld, who retired from the race with a hydraulics issue, set the fifth best lap of the race, lapping within 0.034s of fourth fastest Massa.

Other notables in terms of race pace were Jenson Button some way down the order, but we know he had an overfill in his final pit stop, so that may explain his pace. Christijan Albers’ one stop race saw him over a second off the pace of Spyker team-mate Adrian Sutil and finish a lap behind.
