Bell Mulls Art Plans

Wed 18 Jun, 01:09 PM

Michael Bell is in no rush to decide the next target for his impressive Coventry Stakes hero Art Connoisseur.

The Lucky Story colt maintained his unbeaten run in emphatic style at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, coming from last with a devastating turn of foot to secure the Group Two prize from Intense Focus.

Art Connoisseur is as short as 10-1 with Stan James for next year's 2000 Guineas on the back of his demolition job, and is likely to test his credentials at Group One level in the near future.

"He's fine after yesterday but I haven't really had the chance to get my head around where he is likely to go next," explained Bell.

"Obviously there are the options of the Phoenix Stakes and the Prix Morny, but I will look at the penalties he'll pick up in certain other races.

"I'll have a look and see what penalty he'd get to run in the July Stakes or the Gimcrack, but at this stage I'd think we'll probably be looking to go for a Group One now.

"It looked a brilliant performance so we'll just have to hope he continues to progress on an upward curve.

"We'll see how he gets on in his next race but if he is going to run over seven furlongs there are options in France, Ireland and England."

Although Bell has always had faith in his youngster, the Newmarket trainer admitted he was as taken as everyone else by the manner of Tuesday's success.

"He did surprise me a bit yesterday and it was a very high-class performance," he continued.

"We don't ask him to do that sort of thing at home so we never quite knew how good he was.

"I knew he was good, but it was a little surprise to me he was that good."
