Vermaelen off to Arsenal

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen was Thursday set to have a medical at Arsenal as he bids to complete a move to the Gunners from Dutch side Ajax.

Vermaelen told the Gazet van Antwerpen newspaper he was on the way to sign a four-year deal with the Gunners.

"Everything is set up for the best days of my life. Arsenal are a fantastic club with a coach who backs the beautiful game. I am going to go up against the best strikers in the world but that doesn't scare me," he insisted.

"I will head off Thursday to London for the medical and sign my contract assuming all goes off as planned."

Media reports say Arsenal and Ajax have agreed a fee of around 13 million euros. for the 23-year-old who has spent six years with Ajax.

  1. with regards to commet 6 i could not dissagree more­ eduardo got injured through no fault of his own and­ when he came back he had a good match so he came back­ to soon rosicky is a darn good player they will be back­ and stronger than b4 the playes we could do without­ are eboue adebayore and bendtner we want players­ committed to this club not who want to leave

I also think that Sanderous is a very good defender,­ although we need Vermaelen, but I will sugest Mr Wenger­ should try and offload all these injury prone players­ we have right now because they keep costing us the­ league,Diaby, Rosicky, Djourou,Eduardo, Bishcoff, etc­ They are good players but if they cant play whats the­ need having them.

  5. Hageland is a perfect fit to play with Vermaelen in­ Arsenal defense. Its time to say goodbye to Sylvester,­ Djourou and Senderos. In midfield we need Stephen­ Appiah and the like of Alonso....

  6. He is good and strong defender. We need to flush off­ Sylvester, Senderos and Djourou and bring on board­ Hageland!!

  7. Is he good enough to play in Arsenal defense ? If so,­ then we should sell Djourou, Senderos, and buy other­ good backs to strengthen the defense. Hageland wold be­ an excellent add on.
