David Villa's goal sealed a 1-0 win for Spain over Iraq in Confederations Cup Group A as the European champions secured their 14th consecutive international victory in Bloemfontein.
Valencia striker Villa was unmarked to steer home a header 10 minutes into the second half from Joan Capdevila's cross.
The goal was Villa's 30th for his country, meaning he moves up to second in the all-time goalscoring charts for his country, one ahead of Fernando Hierro but still 14 short of Raul's total of 44.
It secures Spain's place in the semi-finals and stretches their unbeaten run to 34 matches - one short of the world record of 35 held by Brazil.
Spain had to work hard for their victory against the ultra-defensive Asian champions who, despite drawing their opening match against South Africa and losing this one, are still in with a chance of reaching the last four.
They dominated possession throughout, with Liverpool man Xabi Alonso given as much time as he needed to dictate the play in midfield, and Villa could have got his name on the scoresheet earlier than he eventually did.
In the first half, Real Madrid full-back Sergio Ramos curled an inviting cross to him at the far post, but his volley only found the side netting.
And, moments before the goal, Villa headed right at the goalkeeper from a Santi Cazorla cross.
Brazil, France and Australia are the only other countries to win 14 straight matches, according to official FIFA statistics.

well spain rank as team no 1 in the world and for iraq team whom they just start tranning as team togather in one week i think thats good result.. i wish the iraqi team all the best hope with good win next time on newzeland will make the iraqi people back home smile for i know they need it. cheers every one
If some of u think that iraq not playing football i think u better check how tactic work when u face big rival like Spain...if iraq play open football they will end like NZ....Iraq know Spain will beat them ,so atleast they can hold Spain to beat them hardly to get better agreaget...and hope last group game they will beat NZ more than 2 goal n spain beat africa with lots of pain...
good result for Iraq. Spain will now play Italy or Brazil. they did what they had to do. this tourney is nothing more than an exhibition.
What an Asia Champion! I hope they will not go anywhere in future to represent Asia until they learn how to play football.
I am glad that the team will not represent Asia for World Cup Final in South Africa next year.
1 - 0, that is pathetic against eye rack! Dare I say it even we (England) would score at least 2.
Those of you who said it was up to Spain to score are right, why should Iraq play an open game only to be slaughtered by one of the best teams around at the moment. Well done Iraq....
THAR AS SAM NEW SAXAY TANNAS PLAYAR THAR TACKUN ABOOT AN THA TANNAS BLAGS. LEEK I WAS SAYAN JAST A MANUT AGO, ER BECKHOND AS GUD ER FORE HONED AS EXCELLONT BAT ER WENK HOND AS FECKUN MERVALASS.
LEEK A SAY A WAD LAVE TAY GO TAY IREQ AN HALEDAY. INFECT A WAD LAVE TAY GO TAY AL THA WIRE ZANES. IREQ, OFGANISTON, THA CONGO, VIETNOM, GERMONAY, MONCHASTAR ETC ETC.
14. The biggest diving cheat in the premier league is your captain. Maybe if he want's a league title before he retires at 33 he'll be ringing up chelsea again, begging them to have him. It's only because he got threats from his own 'fans' that he stayed. Still 18 in 18 years!
how come england couldnt even lose by a one goal difference in a friendly? anyone with sense would know no one in the world could beat spain when they attack! the iraqis are very clever! this is like chelsea vs barcelona.
come on liverpool
Did FIFA say anything about the effing horns because they are really on my last good nerve....
Aside from the game Iraq played really well just like Egypt against Brazil, these unheard of teams are gonna be fun to watch in next years WC should they make it....
When Italy beat USA 3-1 the other day i read certain reports from the Spanish press suggesting that Italy had struggled. Will they be saying the same things about Spain after beating a poor Iraq side 1-0????
Anyone parking the bus with 10 men sitting inside it will always have good goal difference. NZ at least tried an open game.
IRAQ is the best.. all over the earth..
IRAQ IS THE BEST..
IN SPITE OF THE loss BUT WE STAY THE best..
To loose only 0-1 to a team that has the foolowing :
1st in the international ranking ; 34 matches unbeaten ,Europe champions ; with great players from Barcelona (Europe champion) & Real Madrid ( ex-champion) is realy a win.
Do you agree with me ???
DONNEY, @#$% AP YAA PRACK
Iraq played well considering their situation. Losing 1-0 is still a loss, but the goal difference could be the decider in the end, so not a bad result really. Still with a good chance to qualify.. And for those freaks who are just insulting the Iraqi team (literally or with their illusional predictions), you should consult a psychologist as soon as possible..
that should read LIVERPOOL bound David Villa.
teaming up with torres will give us the title and a very sad cheerio to old red nose and his cheating mancs.
they only have carrick to dive for penalties now that the winkerman is off to spain.
