Lions 2009 - Hook and Murray out of first Test

Eurosport - Thu, 18 Jun 09:41:00 2009

The British and Irish Lions have ruled James Hook and Euan Murray out of their selection plans for Saturday's first Test against world champions South Africa.

James Hook - 2009 Lions - 0

Both players suffered injuries during a bruising 20-8 victory over the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

"Neither player will be available for selection for the first Test. It is an ongoing assessment with both players," Lions' assistant coach Rob Howley said.

Fly-half Hook (pictured) was on the receiving end of a high tackle which left him nursing a bang to his neck and head.

Prop Murray went off with a sprained ankle and although an x-ray has revealed no fracture, he will not be considered for the Test team.

Hook was the more likely contender for the Test 22, as he had been widely expected to provide midfield cover following an impressive tour.

Lions head coach Ian McGeechan is due to announce his Test side on Thursday.

Although Wednesday's match was an often brutal affair, the match citing commissioner has opted to take no further action against any players.

As part of the Lions' tour agreement in South Africa, he had a 12-hour window to make a citing but has decided not to go down that route.

  1. I wonder who put the poll up asking should Paul O Connell be picked in the lions test side. What a plonker you are and you obvously know nothing about the game or the position or the man in question. Muppet.

  2. listen i have the utmost respect for the lions and am a huge fan of ireland . but to complain like they have been doing is a disgrace get on with the game its meant to be hard(not illegal) yes their were high tackles and some pushing and some pulling you find it in almost every game just go look on you tube and what you will see is its every country doing it , @#$% happens im not condoning it , what im saying is it a sad day when you @#$% and moan about it in public . imagine the all blacks complaining that the french were to "physical" sometimes passion and motivation fuel the animal in all of us an over eagerness creeps in due to certain expectations like england in the begining of martin johnsons coaching career . if the southern kings wanted to play dirty how was it that the turned the lions over so much ?

  3. number 33.. wow 1974 and 1997 geeez you have really been dominating hey? what about before 1974 and between 74 - 97 nad after 97 against the Aussies? but we wont mention that now will we. like i said before ur just a bunch of moaning lil girls.. you wouldn see quality if it hit you in the face with a plank! in regard to the jonny w.. who cares man @#$% happens.. he shouldn play if hes always getting hurt and the 50 - 3 thrashing you gave us was answered by a 56 - 7 thrashing of you lot a year later then beaten in the group stages of world cup by SA abd again in the final... lol give it a rest moaner boy!

  4. with reference to Lions being tough...its my understanding that in nature its the female lions that do the hunting not the males ! and I don't think you invented them either...

  5. 1974 1997 and now 2009 what more do we need to say... bring em on... the boks always get a bit nasty when they are worried, first 5 games were great, panic sets in. Remember that oh so late takle on wilkinson which led to a red and 50 point hammering.

  6. The worse thing was Nigel Owen is a British ref. It would have been easy to stop the late and dangerous tackles as they started. Hard is one thing dirty is another. Hook was already tackled when sub-Human caught him late and high.

  8. Number 29! ur such an @ss.. listen just cos you ppl cant play tough rugby doesn mean you gotta slag off other teams.. if you cant take it then dont play the game, its ment for real men not lil boys who cry when they get touched to hard by B teams. so stop moaning an get on with it its rugby not kiss an catches!! btw.. history shows that the lions have lost to Southern Hemisphere teams since the begining! Yes you did invent Rugby but that doesn say much cos you invented most sports and you suck at them all and only when you win do you lot support but as soon as you lot lose ur quick to say its not our first sport so we dont mind. Ur just a bunch of moaning lil girls! There is no need for us to "impose some kind of authourity" Southern Hemisphere has always been tougher! o an just so you know.. A Lion is Afican ok? Lions are ment to be tough.. you should have been called British Panzies! anyway.. yeah we'll definitly bring it on and beat you once again.

  9. WOW...so much inferior complexes coming from SA-Boks, it seems a shrink would work better for them than a game of rugby, the comment "Bullies are just cowards in disguise" comes to mind.
Who invented the game of rugby...YES that's right we did!! and you guys in the Southern hemisphere just can't deal with that and constantly feel the need to impose some kind of authourity, if I am right you are the specialist exponents of the SUPER 14 style of rugby and to boot the current World Champions so lets see a game of rugby played and beat the Lions if you dare........

  10. #25 shanie. Nobody is arguing about the big hits. Its the late tackles from behind and high ones. Just typical sa rugby. Southern hem rugby is probably superior but it is all of your national sports. ( Didnt France beat the all blacks in nz) Lions 2-1

lol you guys are a bunch of prissy mommy boys its rugby not ballet it is suppose to be physical , if you cant take the heat get out of africa . we have heard it all before the springboks are 1 dimensional , predictable and dirty players . what ever gets you through the day 3-0 series win for boks under lining the undeniable fact that southern hemisphere rugby is superior . yes their was late tackles but that is what the ref is for may i remind you that it was a northen hemisphere ref ie not biased , do me a favour grow some balls how many times do you hear south africa or new zealand moan like you do ? you guys want rugby to turn out like football where guys dive for nothing and fall over when the just get touched . bwhahahahah .

  12. does anyone else agree with me when i say "Bring back the 99 call"? I reckon that would really show unity and ake the boks just that little bit cautious about goingover the adge with even the smallest of our players, COYL!

  13. Gypsy Kings were late tackel merchants off the ball and pull down in the tight!
Lions also should play wise football and don`t get in a dog fight with their South A fwds!
We must stay on feet and move the ball which will be to our strength.

  14. The history books show that roughing up the dirt trackers mid-week is part and parcel of tours in the southern hemisphere. But with the likes of O'Driscoll, Roberts, Phillips, Byrne and Croft it will take more than a few bully boys to tame the Lions on Saturday! Make no mistake it will be tough a tough series but this Lions team has enough pedigree to make everyone in old Blighty mighty proud!

  15. If any further evidence was needed this display of so called rugby underlines that South African rugby is missing it’s hard and soul. The even worse news for world rugby is that as a result the current British and Irish Lions tour could be the tour to kill all tours. No rugby supporter endorses this inadvertent or otherwise evade and ambush tactics the Bocks are employing it is boring.

  16. You should be here in SA. All 'late' tackles - the sort that effectively ended Johnnie Wilkinson's career - also against the Boks, were dismissed by the commentators as 'sort of late', 'he was committed' @#$%. The game is to take key players out of the game early. A red card or two is needed to make sure the manic cheats are removed from the field and the intended result is reversed.

From Barbara, on Wed 17 Jun 8:43PM
  17. Gcurrie, you are right that this is a mix up. Hook was not on the receiving end of a high tackle but since there were so many illegal tackles made by the kings it is easy to get mixed up. This game was not about winning for the kings it was about how many lions they could injure to prevent them playing in the test. I think that given the obvious tactics (in my opinion at the request of the SA RFU) the match citing ref must be stupid not to have cited at least three of the kings players. I am at a loss what a player would need to do to get a citing...bring a gun on the pitch?

Still showed that the Lions are a match for any physical side and it was good to see the 'handbags' being laughed off by the Lions pack. Obviously the kings were not tough enough despite their best and illegal efforts.

  18. On the basis that you can do what the hell you like for the first twenty minutes and get away with warnings such as "the next time..." (All Blacks, Aussies and SA do it all the time)the Lions should get their intimidation in early. Evoke the spirit of Willie John McBride and give them HELL!

Erm, I must have been watching a different match. Hook wasn't on the receiving end of a high tackle (as stated in the article here). Winger Human's leg inadvertently (and totally innocently) collided with Hook's neck and head as he was falling after being tackled perfectly legitimately by another player. Why would the writer suggest otherwise?
