Lions 2009 - Murray tour in doubt

Eurosport - Thu, 18 Jun 17:32:00 2009

A leading orthopaedic surgeon expects Scotland prop Euan Murray to play no further part on the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

Euan Murray - Scotland - 0

Murray suffered a sprained ankle during a bruising 20-8 victory over the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

Together with fly-half James Hook, who took a knock to his neck and head, Murray is out of contention for Saturday's first Test against world champions South Africa.

Lions head coach Ian McGeechan will name his Test starting line-up later on Thursday, a team set to be dominated by up to a dozen players from reigning RBS 6 Nations champions Ireland and last year's winners Wales.

Murray though, is destined to reflect on a tour-ending injury that could see a replacement prop summoned by McGeechan, with three games left after Saturday's opening Test.

"Such lateral ligament injuries/sprains are very common, with one in 10,000 of us sustaining this injury every day," said Simon Moyes, who works out of the Wellington Hospital in London.

"He (Murray) will have been treated initially with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation).

"He has had an x-ray which has excluded a break. However, he will need an MRI scan to access the severity of the lateral ligament damage and to exclude any other internal damage to the ankle joint.

"I expect Euan will not need an operation and that he will be treated with splint immobilisation, taping and physiotherapy.

"I expect he will be out of action for six weeks."

Obviously you are still an arrogant half-wit who can't accept anyone disagreeing with your biased opinions.

For the record, I think Will M's comment is simply looking for a reaction and so far as that goes, I would compare it to the drivel you come out with most of the time.

  3. Our english players have played some excellent rugby on this tour!! i dont know what games you lot have been watching!! i suppose if the lions lose you will blame on the England players....
for you lot its not about the actual game and the best team!! all it is is an excuse to slate England.

  4. WILL.M., you're a nob mate, I'm English & a loyal fan, but this is the LIONS, Woodward cocked up a tour 4 years ago because he stuck with what he knew & got it very very wrong. It matters not where the players come from, if they are good enough to play then that's it & I would proudly stand next to any celt if i were a lions player & would hope any celt would feel the same.. you should really watch football as you seem to have the correct size of pea for a brain or maybe a wee janet & jon book???.. This is rugby & as an Englishman i find your comments laughable

    MON THE LIONS

  5. Think you're missing the point slightly Mark H.

My retort was to Will M's comment that we should drop the "British" from the Lions monica due to the amount of "bog trotters etc" on the tour, implying that to be truely "British" we should have picked more English (possibly even Scottish) players to warrant being called "British". If the English team had been playing better rugby than they currently are then I'm sure Geech would have chosen them.

On current form there isn't another English player that springs to mind that deserves a place on the tour more than those already out there.

I agree that a few of the players picked for the tour have not come up to the expected standard, Po'C & D o'C being prime example, Shane Williams is another, but prior to the tour they have been the "class" locks amongst the home nations when considered as a pairing and Shane was lucky to go along at all.

I dare say that Geech is rueing the fact that he appointed P o'C as captain having seen the way that AWJ & Hines have been playing, but he has to make someone captain BEFORE they set off for the distant lands. P o'C was one of many people who could've successfully carried out the captaincy, unfortunatley he's suffered a drop in form, but that's not to say that he can't recover that form in the 1st test.

For me, the only two English players that I feel have warranted a place in the starting line up are Mears and Croft. Shaw?? He's been ok, but nothing outstanding and I'd probably have him on the bench if AWJ & Hines were to start. Flutey's shown flashes of what he can do and it's a @#$% up for me between Monye or Kearney for the wing spot as Bowe has cemented his place with some awesome displays.

I agree that this is all about the BRITISH Lions sticking two fingers up to the current world champions, and I believe that with the mix of players t

  7. Another welshman enters the fray! My test team would be (not seen it yet but should be due 12:30pm) Jenkins, Mears, Vickery, Shaw, O'Connell, Croft, Heaslip, Wallace, Phillips, O'Gara, Monye, Roberts, O'Driscoll, Bowe, Byrne. Unfortunately I doubt whether one Lions forward would get in the Springboks side with the exception of maybe Gethin Jenkins for his mobility, however I believe our backs are superior and only lack of time together would go against us. It will be small margins on Saturday and hopefully O'Gara will have his kicking boots on and stand up in the tackle as I'm sure they will target him (if he plays). Fingers crossed for a narrow Lions victory as that would set things up for a great series. S*d the inter-nation fighting and let's get behind the team, the Lions are the ultimate in rugby due to the difficulty of gelling together in such a short space of time, the Boks won't admit it but they would rather die on the field than lose to the Lions after '97. Let's just hope it's not the anticlimax of '05 which frankly was a disaster!

  8. WILL M You're trying to better than the Donald Ds and sugruejames' of this world. Some ambition!!
Better to have picked the best players than the English bias of the last tour, which was a disaster. Bring on The Bull Hayes! Better than WILL M's (@#$% and) bull anyday.

  10. Not all the Irish players have been a 'class above' as you put it Kev...this isn't about how good your reputation is, it isn't about the country you play for, it's about four nations coming together as 1 and beating the arrogant southern hemisphere teams into submission. Sticking 2 fingers up at them and saying 'we're better than you!'. You have to play well when you get your chance, to show why you should be in the test team, then and only then can you be considered a true Rugby Giant!
Despite playing well all season, PoC has been @#$% all tour, O'callaghan not much better! Ther's 2 Irish 'class above' payers for you...
Wallace Heaslip O'Driscoll and Bowe have been awesome! Hines has been immense along with Jones in the second row and Shaw has been playing well. M. Williams has been a bit quiet, mainly due to the lack of competition from other players at the ruck. Roberts, Byrne and Phillips have been top quality. @#$% up between O'Gara and Jones...? Monye has played well as has Croft Vickery and Mears. Ellis is over rated, I think Mike Blair has a chance.

  11. It was the Celts, Irish, Welsh and Scots, who made the British Empire. Whilst the English stayed at home for their afterrnoon tea and cucumber sandwiches and inventing games they could not play. It's not the winning 'Old Chap', but the being taken apart.!

From PHILIP R, on Thu 18 Jun 11:15AM
  13. Bog trotters and sheep sh***ers they may be but they are truely a class above the lame excuses that English rugby have provided to the tour, or to world rugby in the past 3 years.

A typically xenophobic statement by Will M who has probably never had the chance to watch "real" rugby players at work. I dare say that four years ago he was calling for the team to be called the English Lions, and my, didn't they do well down under!!! NOT!!

The class players on that tour were the Irish and the Welsh, to give them they're correct billing, not the over rated, over paid and in most cases over the hill Englisg players that Clive Woodwards circus decided to take.

Bring on the first test, I'm sure that the "Bog Trotters" and "Sheep Shaggers" will do the BRITISH public proud!!
