Maurice, a former Carolina and Toronto coach, returned to the Hurricanes on December 3 2008, replacing the fired Peter Laviolette.

He directed the team to a 33-19-5 record after the Hurricanes had started the season 12-11-2.

Carolina went on to defeat the New Jersey Devils and top-seeded Boston Bruins in the postseason before being swept by the Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference finals.

The team also said Hall of Fame player Ron Francis would retain his job as associate head coach and add the title of director of player personnel.
