Wimbledon - Nadal to face Hewitt in exhibition

Eurosport - Thu, 18 Jun 16:29:00 2009

World number one Rafael Nadal will test his injured knees ahead of Wimbledon by playing two exhibition singles matches on grass at the Hurlingham Club in London.

The Spaniard, whose defence of his title at the All England Club is still in doubt, will play former number one Lleyton Hewitt of Australia on Thursday and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka on Friday at the club in south west London, organisers said.

Nadal has been having treatment on his knees since pulling out of the Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's Club last week.

Wimbledon starts on Monday.

  1. He (Nadal) lost 6-4 63 to Hewitt! I hope that now, those strange and deluded Nadal fans will start getting my point! The boy is not fit and you keep on hoping he can do something. Again I will hear some of you say it was just an exhibition match, like the last one. Well, keep on dreaming. He even is not suddenly sure he can make Wimbledon.
Kwwp up with your dreams of folly about him winning anything till the end of season if he doesn't take time to rest and recover. The brain wants to play but not the body. He has butchered his body to this extreme and is now paying.
A great player is also one that knows how to keep himself ready for big tournament year-in year-out! Not the one that runs after No1 spot or money!

  3. @4, both of them are great players, it's all about our preferences, and talking about them, I prefer Rafa. He is only 23, he has achieved a lot and the life is in front of him. A real role model on the court and especially of the court, he is modest, mature, a real example for all, young and adult people. Nothing against Roger...I am only sorry that the young Spaniard is injured

  5. nadal is a wise guy. he would not play if those knees were still injured.
what is the rationale in playing 3 rounds and pick up a more serious injury?
but i think this story is good to dish up some excuse if he fails to defend the title. sorry, nadal fans.

  10. I dont think its wise to compare Nadal and Federer in terms of being the best. Nadal is a good player and he had a long way to go. Federer is a Legend and a role model in Tennis and he inspires people in what he does.

  11. All the best Rafa. Do consider sitting out the grass season if you are not recovered. You are young and a long-range view would be wise.
