Wimbledon - Nadal top seed for Wimbledon

Eurosport - Thu, 18 Jun 10:52:00 2009

Defending champion Rafael Nadal has been named top seed for Wimbledon ahead of five-times winner Roger Federer.

TENNIS 2008 Wimbledon Nadal - 0

Wimbledon officials employ a unique seeding system where they take into account previous results at the grass-court championships and there was a strong case for Federer to be named top seed because he has contested the last six finals.

But the committee opted to stick to the world rankings with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick completing the top six.

Russia's Marat Safin was the main beneficiary after being bumped up from his world ranking of 23rd to 15th seed following his unexpected run to the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament which does not stick strictly to the ATP ranking list in deciding seedings. In allocating the slots the seeding's committee takes into account performances on grass over a two-year period.

Former women's champion Maria Sharapova has also been boosted up to 24th seed despite being ranked 59th. The Russian returned to the tour last month after a nine-month lay-off with a shoulder injury and she has been rewarded for impressive record at the All England Club.

The women's top 16 seedings have stuck rigidly to the world rankings with Dinara Safina, Serena Williams and Venus Williams heading the field.

Wimbledon begins on Monday and the draw takes place on Friday.

  1. In the long run it would be better for NadaL TO miss wimbledon in my view. He obviously has problems with his knees. To rush recouperation is a bad idea. He would only need a couple of hard 5 set matches and he could do even more damage. My view would be take the rest of the year off and get it all properly sorted out. He's very unlikely to win the only other slam left this year (us open) as it is the fastest of all slam surfaces and he has never won there. I'm a Federer fan but don't want to see Nadal out of tennis due to coming back too soon. I would hope some Nadal fans would agree if they care about his tennis in the long run. May I add I love to see fed and Nadal play each other . their wimbledon and AO finals were a privelege to watch. I hope to see many more, but to me it's crazy risking long term damage to your knees for even Wimbledon

  2. What about Tim Henman?
    What happened to him?
Has he floated off to cotton wool land in the sky yet?
Maybe the monotonal boring scot can have a try..

  3. Just put Rafa Nadal is THE BEST....and you will read new fairy-tales (H.K.Andersson would be jeаlous ) about new -old kings

  5. I hope there will be some surprises at this Wimbledon also, like it was on RG .. little luck for other guys please .. let us se who will fill like a real man at the end ;-)

  6. Hi there, siskra83, I liked what you said earlier about Federer. As for me, I am an atheist, I don't believe in "God" or GOATs.

  7. @58...everything can happen in somebody's bedroom or livingroom

  8. No.58 By the exact same token, Federer is the huge favorite for Wimbledon, but ... surprise, surprise!

  9. Nadal was the hugeee favourite to Roland Garros as well, but ...surprise surprise!!!!
Go Roger, Wimbledon is his livingroom ;)

  10. I do hope Rafa wins. But if he doesn't play I am rooting for DelPotro. Or Djokovic, but that's a very long shot. However he is streaky enough to surprise us all. As for Murray, he is in such agony when he plays that it's really not pleasant to watch. He takes all the enjoyment out of the game. So I hope he goes home early.

  11. Rafa IS injured, so everybody believes (including Federer ...that's why he is so confident) that this W. will be a piece
of cake for Roger. This is a fact......on the other side, the young Spaniard very often proves that "impossible" does not exist in his dictionary. Who believes that on AO, after he played more than 5 hours and with less than a day rest, he would beat very easy healthy and relaxed Roger

  12. SO... WHY IS SAFINA THE TOP SEED?
IT SHOULD BE VENUS OR SERENA!

  14. A difficult decision for the seedings committee at Wimbledon, but prob the right one,Wimbledon is unique in this situation, basing their seedings on the last two years performance on grass,Nadal and Fed have identical records over the last two years,so Nadals n0 1 ranking came in to play.Fed will be hungry to regain his crown, while Nadal will be desperate to hold on to it,so its going to be fascinating to see who will prevail.I just hope Nadal doesn't enter injured and have to retire, this will would make the two halves of the draw lopsided.

  15. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

Does it really matter to be 1st or 2nd seed? At the end of the day it may be more important if one has to play the 3rd or 4th seed, which may happen not depending whether you are 1st or 2nd seed.
I do not think Nadal will make the last 4 and I would bet on Andy.

From fjcraveirocarvalho, on Wed 17 Jun 9:10PM
  16. Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't we reading about Nadal still having an injured knee just 4-5 days ago and he might not make Wimbledon ? well he's either a very fast healer or he's taking a very big risk, i reckon it's the latter and although i like watching Nadal play and would love nothing more to see him defend his title i can't see him lasting too long if this is the case.

Federer will be waiting in the wings.

  17. It does not matter a @#$% about whether Murray is Scottish or British, but he must win Wimbledon for the posers and toffs in the tennis clubs to accept him. Tim was a rich boy given all the coaching possible. He tried hard and wasn't a bad guy but he fell short. This is not a game which appeals to the ordinary people as you have to have some sponsorship, which is hard to get. Murray is the best Brit player ever in my book, and I do not like his surly attitude much. Will he win this year? I am a fence sitter, and the barbed wire is hurting my privates.

  18. VAMOS RAFA!!!! i believe he can win...=) he has rested and prepared very good...so just Good Luck, Rafa!!!

  19. Andy doesn't go out there and primp and preen like a lot of sportsmen. He just gets on with playing the game and winning matches. We are so proud of you Andy and even though you don't win Wimbledon this year you sure will another year. Good luck. You are a true ambassador for the game.

From Sandra, on Wed 17 Jun 8:07PM
  20. Go on Rafa my son, do the business and stuff it to the Swiss doughnut with a bagel and a breadstick like you did at RG last year.
