Wimbledon - Your view: Federer to win Wimbledon

Eurosport - Thu, 18 Jun 10:50:00 2009

Over half the Eurosport-Yahoo! readers in our poll believe Roger Federer will win his sixth Wimbledon this year and become the most successful Grand Slam player in history.

Roger Federer - 0

Federer's recent success at the French Open saw him equal Pete Sampras's record of 14 Majors and our readers believe number 15 is just around the corner.

Our poll has Federer (pictured) well ahead of his rivals. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is a distant second, with fitness concerns perhaps explaining his low number of votes.

Only a fraction of those who voted think Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic will lift the title in SW19, with the 'Other' category securing more votes than either the Briton or the Serb.

We asked: Who will win Wimbledon?

You said:

Novak Djokovic: 4% (672 votes)

Roger Federer: 61% (9,262 votes)

Andy Murray: 5% (730 votes)

Rafael Nadal: 14% (2,076 votes)

Other: 16% (2,464 votes)

15,204 votes as of 11:30am UK time, June 18)

So is Federer the man to beat at Wimbledon this year? Are we dismissing Nadal too easily? And who might cause a surprise? Leave you comments below.

Here is what some of you have been saying in our comment boxes already.

Yiannis P: If anyone thinks that anybody will pose a serious problem to Roger Federer at Wimbledon they are deluded. It took the most in-form ever Rafa playing an error-prone, sub-par Federer, five hours to beat him last year and he still almost lost. This time Federer will come in more positive mentality and will probably be better than last year. A sub-par Rafa will not beat Federer at Wimbledon and certainly Andy Murray will have to wait to get his chance as well.

Steve G: This year is a lot less predictable than previous years. Federer has not played his warm up tournament in Halle. Nadal did not play Queens and is struggling and could possibly be impaired with injury. Haas has played magnificently in his last two tournaments. Djokovic has never performed well at Wimbledon. Nalbandian is injured. That means that Murray has a chance, but Fed has to be the favourite.

Chris w: I would love a Nadal/Murray final, chances are though with all the build up surrounding Murray he'll be out in the first two rounds knowing his luck. Federer is a good player but he needs a coach back, he is temperamental and inconsistent. I bet if he met Nadal in the French final he wouldn't have won. If Nadal's knees are sorted then it's his title again!!

Forfarmarkus: Nearly everything is against Murray winning. He has never won a slam or beaten Federer on grass or in five sets. The last sixteen grand slams have been won by either Federer or Nadal with one exception = Djokovic. Federer is almost invincible on¬ grass which happens to be his best surface. But for bad light and not being 100 per cent fit he may well have beaten Nadal in last year's final. And if we forget the two mighty opponents above Murray there's still Roddick, Verdasco, Davydenko, Ljubicic, Ferrer, Del Potro, Soderling, a rejuvenated Haas, and several other dangerous floaters to negotiate.

Carlos480bc: With Nadal's fitness a doubt, I'm looking no further than Federer, Murray and maybe Djokovic .Del Potro is a dark horse but is unproven on the green stuff.

  1. Get well Dear Special One,for many years, you've been the only one who could put a stop to my man Federer,to my own shame, you went on to utterly destroy him and i thought you went one step further,if that's even possible,on the ladder of Greatness. But,to every one of your fan,i hope you will forgive me,although for sure your knee is failing you,i think it is the number one spot that added to it.Mark my words,i have absolutely no doubt Nadal is and will remain among the most loved and greatest players, and that physical strain in a "give his all and more "game finally caught up with him,but the pressure of being number one has been the final nail in your ...no i refuse to say that word. And i believe as well as a good physio and strong healthy knees, your mental strengh as Number One has to be reinforced. To me it's no surprise your health gave up on Nadal as soon as he reached top spot. He's proved to all he's a warrior though, and i'm sure he'll find a way.In the meantime,to all Federer's detractors,it took a very special man to dethrone him,a man we should all support, but that's what it took to overthrow Federer, and still,The Swiss Genius is still here after all,and that's the ultimate proof how truly great he is.

  2. i think federer can and will win wimbledon. it Might not be an easy win seeing the way the tournaments have been unpredicatble this year, but oh welll he is my favourite.we all know how federer can turn a match around. And anyone who is ready to beat federer should be mentally prepared for a 5-set match cos it won't be that easy to defeat him in a 3 set game.

  3. The amount of partisanship and absolute drivel spoken on this forum is incredible. I thought this was for TENNIS fans, sure we all have our favourites, but isn't it about seeing the GAME OF TENNIS played not just at the highest level by the most able opponents, but watching the development of other players eg Murray, Monfils, Simon etc who bring other dimensions to the game. We may not like everybody's style, but nobody lasts forever and the game is constantly changing. To accuse players of faking injury etc is puerile without absolute proof. I admire Federer, he has in my opinion raised by his consistency, the level at which the game is played, but Nadal too has brought his speed and agility with a breathtaking shot making ability, why can we not praise both these players, have our favourite but recognise the skills of the other without resorting to the level of abuse found on this forum.

  5. Roger is the greatest ever indeed. It's hard to compare generations, but there are a few facts, that can be used for this comparison.
    1. 14 Grand Slams - yes, Sampras won 14 as well, but it took him longer, and he never had such a consistency, as Roger.
    2. Career Grand Slam - Despite winning 14, Sampras was not able to win the French. Agassi won it, but he had only 8 Grand Slams.
    3. Consistency. This is perhaps the most important thing. Since Wimbledon 2004, Roger has been to every single semi-final of every single Grand Slam. In fact, he basically bas been to every single final, except for a couple of semi-finals. This is what makes him really great and different - nobody, even Sampras did not have this kind of consistency. He would win a slam, then sometimes lose in the earlier rounds, or withdraw, etc. Federer's 14 slams, career GS, and the consistency make him the greatest ever.
Of course, if we just see the ultimate record of 14 GS, Roger is still tied with Sampras. However, when he wins 15, 16, 17, etc., then this question will be finally put to rest.

  6. Well, nobody thinks that Nadal may be pretending he has knees problems. I don`t say he doesn`t, but maybe it`s not so agravated as everybody says it is. Maybe he "felt" Federer`s mentallyt recovery, after Madrid and maybe he tries to "relax" Federer and everybody else before Wimbledon. You have another style of play and mentality when you know your opponent has some problems. I don`t know, I think Rafa will make a nice surprise at Wimbledon, because the medical technology and treatments and other stuff can help a player to recover pretty well, but that`s just my oppinion..

  7. I don't believe Roger Federer will win this year's Wimbledon. Nadal certainly won't even aside from his weaknesses in his legs!

Andy Murray stands a very good chance this year - have never seen the Brit (Scot) look more determined and his win over at Queens showed this.

C'mon Britain (Scotland) - let's show then that Britain really does have Talent!

  8. Roger will win his 15th grand slam.. @#$% Nadal he just lucky he won Wimbledon last year...Nadal your carrier are an over..Nobody deserved to won Wimbledon except ROGER.. so now only Roger qualified and deserved to won this tournament now and 5 years ahead...I don't see anybody can defeat Roger on grass..Roger are KING OF THE GRASS..remember that..Murray not as good as Roger..he just lucky to everybody talk about him because he a British player and all media focus on him not as talented player..Djokovic are good but not too good for Roger on grass..Came on wake up, open your eyes...watch the real man who had 14th grand slam..now became 15th..Came on ROGER We're COUNTING ON YOU!!!!!!!!! ROGER BOLEHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
    YYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHA AAAAAAAAAAA..........LOVE U ROGER....

  9. According to Nadal fans, when Nadal loses at Roland Garros, the whole tournament should end that very day because no one deserves to win it if they don't beat him in the final.
These fans need to be reminded that Nadal is NOT the French Open nor the other way round. It existed before him and will after he retires. The world keeps spinning when he loses in the 4th round and doesn't make it to the final.
This is SPORTS, people. It's a test of endurance, strength and health. Federer went all the way, working his @#$% off in 5-setters and scares. He deserved the trophy.

  10. what is wrong with you people? is it the fact that santa doesn't exist? i mean this is professional sport. there is a lot of money invested in each top player. roger have a life contract with nike. itf is earning with this more than federer himself, his immortality will mean so much for future of tennis income. i dont ask any of you to agree, but if you watch any sport, without prejudices, please, without, it is inevitable that you come to conclusion similar to this.
i enjoy tennis, and i was scared that i would never be able to watch it with same eager as before this years RG, but fortunately, these kind of things happen once in a while. and i can live with that.
and one more thing, RG story is something special, last year nadal had to play five lefthanders, never happen before, then djokovic, and final.
this year, rogers incapability to win anything, except madrid, breaking at every step, his statements of RG preparation...
    anyway the time will tell

  11. If federer plays like he did during french open at times against good grass players federer will be out early i think someone like roddick or karlovic may pose threats if both fit and play there agame also Murray will have his chance and has millions of critics to answer and that is to win a grand slam which no brit has achieved for years i think this could be a very interesting wimbledon.

  15. As to the question if Federer is the man to beat: Federer is always the man to beat. Sometimes he is beaten, sometimes not.

From Casalpusterlengho, on Thu 18 Jun 7:19PM
  16. One more thing te.rabbit if your theory is true then we should expect Andy Murray to win the Wimbledon, and Henman should have won it because the media and the crowd were so crazy about him to win Wimbldon. Don't you see that there is something wrong with the way you're trying to explain Federer's victory?

From Ilda S, on Thu 18 Jun 7:00PM
  17. te.rabbit, Roddick is an excellent tennis player. I doubt he could win Wimbledon, but i thoight of him too. Would be really nice if he won!

From Casalpusterlengho, on Thu 18 Jun 6:52PM
  18. Rabbit,
don't you think that media put much more pressure on Federer by expecting him to win than in other's players? I didn't see any pressure on Hass or Del Potro, they simply ran out of gass becuase they played their best tennis for 2.5 sets but you know how tennis is, the moment one's concentration slips away the other player starts playing better. This is tennis and happens all the time. If you see this conspiracy then you shouldn't watch tennis or any other kind of sport at all. I think that the other players had nothing to lose that's why they pushed Federer to the brink, who on the other hand had all the pressure in the world on his shoulders. You could see it on him in the last 2 games in the finals, who was in tears, even before the match was over. Soderling had never been in the finals before and from what i've seen during all these years of watching tennis, that's what happens. He didn't lose because of what he heard for 48 hours prior to the match, he simply lost because of lack of a GS final experience and becuase Federer played astonishingly in the final, you can't deny it, Andy Murray can confirm this to you. Do you remember the 2008 US open final?
And as for the thumb down, don't worry, i don't even notice that.

From Ilda S, on Thu 18 Jun 6:50PM
  19. why didnt anyone mentioned rodick?

    From te.rabbit, on Thu 18 Jun 6:43PM
  20. No question about it, anyone participating has the chance, only a few the potential to win Wimbledon: Del Potro, Djokovic, Murray, Federer, Nadal.

My guess: Juan Martin del Potro, my surprise: Novak Djokovic, my unimaginability: Andy Murray, my wish: Roger Federer, my probability: Rafael Nadal
