It was tough decision - Venus

Thu 18 Jun, 04:04 PM

Former West Brom boss Tony Mowbray would not have left for anyone other than Celtic, according to Mark Venus.

Venus also quit his post on the Baggies coaching staff to become Mowbray's right-hand man at Parkhead and believes it was a tough decision for all concerned.

"I think it was a far bigger decision than people realise," Venus told the Express and Star. "He had a lot of affection for the players and the fans at West Bromwich and they were great with him.

"Everyone knows the size of the club at Celtic and to take part in European football was a big pull for him but I don't think he would have left Albion for anyone else.

"He felt the job was unfinished there. We only know one way to play and sometimes it was to the detriment of points. But the bottom line is it's what we believe in."

  1. Did you see Stoke wanted to bring in Paul Scholes as player coach?

He turned them down as he doesn't know anything about throwins!

  2. Drew, I'm not in Peace's pocket I just have a little common sense and can see the bigger picture. Unlike a lot of football fans who just want money thrown at a problem Peace is trying to create a team of staff who can work within budgets. Unless I'm very much mistaen pretty much every managment role in the real world involves a certain amount of people managment and also budget managment. Anyone can go to Man City, Spend 500M and challenge for honours, but what happens when the money, or chairmans patience runs out? Man City will go broke and not exist thats what.

As for Peace's investment, Jeremy Peace is the front man of a group made up of sheffield businessmen. Jeremy Peace owns about 10% of WBA it is the group who own the rest. Therefore as a group they are in this to make a profit and so can demand what they like.

Its called Business, read a book or a decent newspaper Drew and you'll learn something.

  3. Marklaura is a potter then? fancy watching that @#$% week in week out, one Rory Delap away from relegation, what a class act you are!!
From bitter and twisted baggie. (bitter cos we aint got a numpty who can hurl the ball 300 yards, keep playing the great football potters!)

    From paulday448, on Sun 21 Jun 8:42PM
  4. to answer 44 the potters stayed up because they are a better team than you as results show . and nxt year you will go down again .new players come in see the mongrels in the stands and cant be bothered you are a disgrace to midlands football.the ground should be leveled and the fans banned for life from every ground

  5. Venus your talking through uranus. Mowbray did'nt listen to any advice,he basically bought a load of rubbish it was'nt as if the chairman did'nt give him any money to buy players last season, his choices were poor and the fans suffered for it. So now you say that it was a hard choice, well, words are easy to say,he still left and his sidekicks go with him. You say there was unfinished business there for him, well i remember not long ago Mowbray saying he had a job to do here, and i think it was the lure of cash for players and european football was the lure. I for one just pray we get a reasonable manager,Curbs or Coppell will do,then sell the wasters we bought from last year and start again.

From BOB S, on Sun 21 Jun 4:37PM
  6. mowbray made some awful signings, defence was terrible,if we had a no nonsense defender we would have stayed up,my two daughters could have stopped some of those goals last season.last year was our best chance so far of staying up,with the strength of the clubs finances,no debt, there were teams who we were capable of overtaking, but we didnt.i cant believe the potters stayed up.they are a disgrace to the division.

From Chris, on Sat 20 Jun 9:16PM
  7. Who has the job? 3rd choice hahahahahaha

From Charles, on Sat 20 Jun 9:29AM
  8. and lastly, WHICH three teams for the drop from the Premier next season ?
AS it cannot be , stoke, hull, wolves, blues and burnley now can it ???
i think burnley must be odds on, along with stoke and wolves ?
think hull have money to escape it again, and blues have pot loads of wonga, this time around they spending big time, though can they ever play passing football ?

From Drew W, on Sat 20 Jun 3:12AM
  9. MY choice for a manager would be who is available at NO compensation then that money can ALSO be used on new players, and wheres the PARACHUTE 15m going ??? in Paul C's mates Peaces back pocket ???
Anyway, A Irvine has been linked at the albion for the LAST 2 months so hes got to be up there BUT will cost them, i do not rate A Boothroyd at all, and he will have the SAME problem NO money for GOOD players
I still reckon either Curbs, or Coppell but would they come to a small club with no money and no way to buy players in january window ?
I think D McInnes is TOO green, as in not as much eperince in the job quite yet, maybe in one years time ? BUT then should we need a scottish manager who really are in leagues below our 4 divisions ?
D ferguson, well only see young man utd players being loaned then, and maybe we are a little TOO BIG for him
BUT we AINT got a say, it will be ..... who will come on peaces demands and available funds which so far is NIL unless players are sold first !

From Drew W, on Sat 20 Jun 3:09AM
  10. Paul_C YOU are ALSO wrong Morrison ONLY cost us 1.5m !!!
AND you got to ask yourself THIS question ? WELL NO, 2 Questions :D
firstly, WAS the players Mowbray bought 'HIS' players ? as i do NOT believe MOORE was ever in the plans that was an agreement by Peace, the man you love, with the Curtis Davies deal !
secondly, My Mowbray like his predecessors ONLY were managers of the WBA on peaces terms of LACK of money, they werent paid fortunes, like the soccer players, so who would blame ANY of them if another club pays them TRIPLE ? after going to the press and stating squad must be CUT with more games to play BEFORE telling the man who WAS appointed the manager of the WBA ?
Peace is no good, it really is a BIG boys game, and not someone who when push comes to shove throws his rattle out of the pram, if he wants out then sell his holding at a REASONABLE sum ! AS IN NOT FOR PROFIT !!!

From Drew W, on Sat 20 Jun 3:04AM
  11. sherbert_d YOU are wrong, well, i guess Celtic are 'debt' free BUT that is BECAUSE you have a BILLIONAIRE FOREIGN owner so, thats not much swing in the arguement really, just you can use his money to buy any players and ANY managers !
BUT Peace, is a POOR business man HE wants OUT BUT wants TOO much for his 75% shareholding
and today soccer is for the BIG boys so he should leave quietly before the fans move him out

From Drew W, on Sat 20 Jun 3:00AM
  12. My simple reason for No to A Boothroyd is the way his teams play, they make stoke look like barcelona!

I too would love to see Curbs there, however whether he would drop into the championship is another story.

Strachan wouldn't come so it's pointless discussing him.

My top 4 in order: -

    1: Curbs
    2: D Fergusson
    3: D Jones
    4: D Mcinnes

From Paul C, on Fri 19 Jun 10:52PM
  13. Aidy Boothroyd as manager may not be that bad, he got Watford promoted and then never had any money for players and when they went down he was let down by the board who sold his players because of bad finance problems and of course resulted in him losing his job. Has Alan Curbs been mentioned again in the tabloids, he would be my choice or get Gordon Stracts, could do with somebody to breath fire up the bottoms of our players.

    From si.worton, on Fri 19 Jun 10:19PM
  14. Not coincidence, simple mathmatics.

Megson got us promoted then asked for extra £40,000 a week to sign Hasselbank and Echiogu (Excuse spelling) Peace Refused. So Megson walked.

Robson kept us up (Or should that be the other very poor teams?) Then disappointed, As was the case @ Middlesboro he demanded more funds and was refused by Peace who had already given him 15M to spend.

    Mowbray spent over 3M on:-

    Morrison
    Brunt
    Valero
    Carson
    Moore
    Bednar (Well 2.75M)
    Zuiverloon

    2M on Meite

    1.4M On Cech.

All this money and we won 34 Points!!

We Spent the 9th Highest amount in the premiership and finished 20th!!

I feel Peace was more than justified in demanding that the playing staff was cut.

Mowbray then threw his toys out the pram.

The simple fact is that all three previous managers have had good moments and bad but all three have walked away when the going gets tough and peace has demanded more from them for the money WBA has invested. I once again refer to the fact that as a club we cannot afford to waste millions so Peace is just looking after the best interests of the Club at heart. The only mistakes continually made is having managers who don't have the bottle for the fight.

Good forbid Boothroyd, i will honestly return my season ticket.

From Paul C, on Fri 19 Jun 8:32PM
  15. It feels so good to be debt free playing scunny away on a wet tuesday night!! (no offence Scunny) Right, heres the deal, Tony flooded the club with midfielders so we could play with one up front every game. Great football in the middle of the park, no striker who knew where the net was, hopeless comical defending (Fulham away, Liverpool home for example) because of this Terry Thomas in goal was like a jigsaw (fell to pieces in the box) Relegation!
Tony Mowbray stuck to his methods but didnt get a defensive pairing sorted throughout the whole season!! Im not asking for 10 million players, just not loanees who can piss off back to their clubs after giving 50% effort.
    40 years a baggie!

    From paulday448, on Fri 19 Jun 3:29PM
  16. I stand by what I said. Peace may be a good business man, but the same mistakes have
been made, time after time, with three different managers. Or is that just coincidence ? Just heard on the radio Boothroyd may be top of the list.

From Anthony, on Fri 19 Jun 1:46PM
  17. I'm sick and tired of people mouthing off about Peace. We have spent nearly £35 million in the last 5 years and recouped around £50M. That doesn't mean that we don't spend money just that we have a sensible chairman. Unfortunatly alot of people seem to think that football clubs are seperate from the laws of business and that they can continually run at a loss. The simple facts are that clubs that are run on peoples emotions tend to fail. See Newcastle, Leeds, Bradford, Southampton. Clubs that are run on a tight ship tend to succeed. See Hull, Stoke, Blackburn etc.

The facts remain that we are NOT a big club and we do not have a multi-millionaire backing us. We therefore have restrictions on what we can pay and the wages we can pay, yes this does caus some friction for managers but for TM to come out and blame it on Peace is disgraceful, his signings have been awful and in the main contributed to our relegation. He let phillips go (I think it was the right decision) but failed to replace him, his defensive signings were poor and considering he used to be a centre half he couldn't pick one out from 100 yards. No goalscorer, no Defence, No ball winning midfielder.

I enjoyed him while he was there but once again peace has managed to get 2.75M (Mowbray + Venus + Grant) for a trio who got us relegated!! Amazing

As for Valero, the best player on our books, if only we knew how to play him.... What Tony was thinking buying a 23 year old playmaker and trying to turn him into a ball winning midfielder i'll never know!!!

Tony Mowbray is a good manager, not great, and 100% not worth 2M.

We might not have millions spent on players with Peace but we'll always have a club that makes a profit, how many clubs wished they could say that?

From Paul C, on Fri 19 Jun 11:58AM
  18. Jim, what you are saying is correct. What disappoints me at the Albion is, we have had
several attempts at the Premier. With three different managers. Every time, the problems seem to be the same. i.e. we don't sign the right players in the summer, then in the window, only bring in loanees. When did we last make a decent signing in the
window ? What I am trying to say is, if we had "speculated to accumalate" a little,
during the last five years, then maybe we would have paid for the extra cost, by staying in the Premiership. Why spoil the ship for a ha'peth of tar ? I don't have
your great length of support, this season is my 40th as a Baggies fan. We have seen a
lot of changes since the glory days. Up the Baggies !

  19. DETRICH - If you were familiar with these message boards, you would know why the term "windae-licker" is used, and precisely who that term is aimed at. It, quite simply, is an "in-joke" on here, so please get off your high horse!

From Singin' Ginger!!, on Fri 19 Jun 7:48AM
  20. window licker is a derogatory term used to describe disabled people, is not funny, but is an example of discriminatory language.

it is usually most often used by non disabled people preening their reflection in the local threshers store. Even then it remains unfunny and an example of discriminatory language.
