Tough start pleases Beardsley

Thu, 18 Jun 12:10:11 2009

Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley has welcomed a tough start to the club's bid for an immediate return to the Barclays Premier League.

The Magpies begin at relegated West Brom on August 8 and face fellow former top-flight sides Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Crystal Palace and Leicester in the first five games.

Beardsley, a veteran of the successful 1983-84 promotion campaign, told the club`s official website: "It's a brilliant start. The first five games are all against former Premier League sides and clubs with ambition to get back in the top flight.

"They will be tough games but I'm sure they will be good games. That's also important for the fans that we did have some big games at home early on in the season.

"All of that points towards some good games and also a chance to take points from teams who, come the end of the season, will probably be up there in the promotion race."

  4. No manager, no new signings, no settled new owner, and a team with players who give 70% effort for 50k a week.
Unless these problems are solved, I won't expect much from the start of the season.

  7. i doubt we'll go straight back up, we've no manager, no owner, no new players, the OLD players that haven't had the good sense to f**k off yet and we're a few weeks from pre-season!

  8. I agree 100%; i'd rather these games to start with then the likes of Blackpool, Plymouth and Peterborough (no offence intended to those clubs). I feel we need to be eased back into this league, and these are just the perfect fixtures in which to do it; they are more familiar names, and not the likes of Doncaster and Scunthorpe which really will hit home the 'harsh reality' of the Championship (again, no offence to those clubs)!!

  9. I'd be very surprised if Newcastle went straight back up. I don't think they've got a good enough team. And with them starting fixtures they may struggle. A few losses and the morale goes and they could end up in another relegation battle. Like Leeds did a few seasons ago.

  10. With the state of things at the club it could actually be a good start to the campaign. If we manage to get something out of these games then it will give everyone a boost, but should they fail to win these, then at least they will have the easier games at a later point in the season when they are perhaps playign better and can play a bit of catch up then. Not all doom and gloom :)
