New Zealand rider Henderson crossed the line with only Downing for company having been set up nicely by his team-mates on the 178km stage.

Alex Rasmussen (Saxo Bank) came in some way back in third.

Jos Van Emden of Rabobank retains the overall lead of the race, with team-mates Lars Boom and Sebastian Langeveld close behind.

A breakaway of four, consisting of Piet Rooijakkers (Skil-Shimano) Peter Kennaugh (Sky), Stijn Neirynck (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Andrea Tonti (CMO), appeared after 30km and that group stayed together for the next 14km.

Sky shared the workload with HTC-Columbia as the stage entered the kilometres, with the British team holding off their rivals to take victory.

Henderson told Team Sky's website: "We didn't get it right on yesterday's stage. We just made some simple mistakes but we sat down afterwards, talked it through and vowed to learn from it - and that's exactly what everyone's done.

"We corrected those simple mistakes today, jockeyed positions around a little bit and it all worked out perfectly.

"I was just guiding them from behind, talking to them and making sure everyone knew where they had to be and when they had to do it."
