Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson fully expects to prise striker Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham by the end of the summer.
Ferguson has revealed the Barclays Premier League champions have already made an offer for the Bulgarian who scored 23 times for the Londoners last season.
The Scot is confident the former Bayer Leverkusen dangerman can add a new element to an already deadly United attack and finally turn attention away from the protracted Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga.
"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," Ferguson told The Sun.
"Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack."
While Ferguson admits there are still issues to be resolved with Spurs, including the price of the £20million-plus striker, he is happy to bide his time to ensure a successful pursuit.
"I think time will work for us more than against us," said Ferguson, who is with the United squad in South Africa on a pre-season tour.
"We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future."

I can't see Spurs holding on to Berbatov, and I think he will be a great signing for United.
If he, Rooney and Tevez shine while Ronaldo is injured, I would be delighted to see Ronaldo struggle to get back in the team on ability, it would serve the little %£$* right.
roy i agree about the new keeper, but we have foster and kuzack (however its spelt) who are under 28 so we are prepared for 10 or so years
berb will end up at mu for 24m. is he worth it at his age? .....maybe.i think he would be a great replacement for ole, and good for the likes of rooney , who will then have to peform to keep his place in the side. i still think that the rotation will help united aswell later in the season when legs start to get tired.
mu must also invest in a top class keeper very soon , as the mighty edwin isnt getting any younger.
i think that saha must go and a replacement striker must come in aswell. someone with a bit of pace and a bit of height.
then the mighty reds will rule for another 5 years.
Did SAF really say this or is this BS from The Sun?
Bad form if he did say it.........
yes, bring on the berb!!
**%&£" Man U i hope to see berbatov playing in FC Barcelona next year. Eto'o for berbatov and 10m.
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNIIITTTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!
I don't get this whole Rooney thing. Yeah he's a clever player, but his impact is overstated. Still to really prove himself, in a way that Ronaldo undoubtably already has. Unfortunately for UTD Ronaldo is using them as a feeder club for Real. And for three months he'll be recuperating/nightclubbing!???
Sheva only cost 30m because Chelsea were paying, any one who watched the prem last season could clearly see he was not worth any way near that amount. It was Roman who wanted him not the manager who in my mind although i'm not a chelsea fan was and is a great manager bit of a gob but still very good, he was undermined and expressed his disgust so Roman through his toys out.
If Man Utd want Berbatov they can pay a hell of a lot more than £20M!!! Shevchenko went for 30M and he's a pile of @#$%! I'd rather keep him for the remainder of his contract as we're not going to be able to get a better striker for that much.
From Clinton Kinyanyi!!!!!!!!!!
CAN ANYONE SAY A THING? ACTUALLY MAN-U WILL/IS THE BEST CLUB IN ENGLAND/CHAMPIONS WITH EACH PLAYER HAVING THE ABILITY TO SCORE!! GO ON GO FERGIE AND LET BERBATOV NOT GO THIS TYM!
Rooney...u don't about soccer if you don't know him...
Don't be zealous, accept the facts that MU are top of the world...
rooney who???????
with rooney and beratov up front ronaldo on the wing who is going to stop use come on you mighty reds
