The Quakers, playing in front of 6,698 fans, failed to stem the tide of Toon attacks, which began after just three minutes with Damien Duff putting the visitors into the lead.

The League Two side were briefly level soon after though, when Dean Windass, who had earlier forced a good save from Tim Krul, converted a penalty following Tamas Kadar's trip on Mark Convery.

However, the goals soon started to flow with Kevin Nolan and two from Shola Ameobi making it 4-1 to Newcastle at half-time.

The second-half was more of the same and, despite another strike from Windass, the Toon ran out comfortable winners with goals from Jonas Gutierrez, Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll completing the rout.

Owen Garvan and Kevin Lisbie were on target as Ipswich Town's tour of Ireland got off to a winning start.

Midfielder Garvan struck twice after striker Lisbie had opened the scoring as Roy Keane's men secured a comfortable 3-0 win at Waterford Town.

Young trialist Shane O'Connor played the opening 45 minutes at left-back while Alex Bruce, David Norris, Alan Quinn and Jordan Rhodes all got run-outs.

Lewis Guy and Robbie Clark were on target as Doncaster Rover 's pre-season preparations continued with a 2-0 win at Barrow.

Guy collected Paul Heffernan's pass and fired home the opener in the first half.

Boss Sean O'Driscoll made wholesale changes at the interval and rookie midfielder Clark hit a spectacular 25-yarder to secure the victory.

Assistant manager Richard O'Kelly and goalkeeping coach Lee Butler also got a surprise taste of the action as late substitutes.
