Premier League - The Greatest: Liverpool verdict

Eurosport - Sat, 18 Jul 10:24:00 2009

Steven Gerrard dominated the voting in our latest poll as Eurosport-Yahoo! readers named him Liverpool's greatest ever player.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 Premier League Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard - 0

The talismanic skipper may never have led his team to the league title, but it has not been due to a lack of effort.

In 11 years with the club he has often made it seem like he's the only thing standing between the top four and a slide into mid-table obscurity - and that's even before you start thinking about the cups.

Kenny Dalglish finished a distant second with 19 per cent of the vote, though many of the comments - the best of which are below - celebrated the Scot's brilliance both as a player and a double-winning manager.

In third place on 15 per cent was Eighties goal machine Ian Rush, a worthy result for the Welshman.

Past greats Billy Liddell and Kevin Keegan barely registered on the voting board, however, while our number three pick - Graeme Souness - came in second to last.

Eurosport-Yahoo! verdict:

1. Kenny Dalglish

2. Steven Gerrard

3. Graeme Souness

Readers' verdict (26,923 votes):

1. Steven Gerrard - 49% - 14,454 votes

2. Kenny Dalglish - 19% - 5,762

3. Ian Rush - 14% - 4,303

4. Kevin Keegan - 7% - 1,985

5. Robbie Fowler - 5% - 1,594

6. John Barnes - 3% - 778

7. Graeme Souness - 1% - 427

8. Billy Liddell - 1% - 377

Pulak Parag: Steven Gerrard has, for much of his career, been the sole talisman of Liverpool FC. When the team's been down and out, Steven's been the only one players, and indeed fans, have looked up to... While the Liverpool team of the 80s was far superior to today's one, it's Gerrard who scores over Dalglish in terms of personal greatness.

Danswaste: Kenny is a legend, but he came into an already great team whereas Gerrard has basically been Liverpool for about 10 years.

chris1616_21: Gerrard, the mastermind behind the red revival of Istanbul against AC Milan, is Captain Fantastic. He has a great attitude on the pitch, he doesn't behave like some selfish and egotistical prima donna, and he has been at the club since childhood. Gerrard is an all-round player. Name one thing Gerrard can't do on the pitch. He dribbles, passes, shoots, scores, tackles, defends, attacks, wins balls... and the list goes on.

Frank N: Dalglish and Rush, could not split them. Think Lennon/McCartney.

Yasthered: Liddel was the man for me. He had all the qualities a pro should have. His sort of play and attitude led the example for the next generation of pros. You name it - he had it

carlking1: If Dalglish were playing today and at the height of his game he would be the first £100 million player, up there with George Best and Pele. No-one else comes close, except maybe Maradona and Cruyff.

J.C.: Kenny Dalglish, because not only was he a sublime player but as his actions post-Heysel and post-Hillsborough show, a classy man.

Dicehk: There's a reason why they call him King Kenny, as truly he was the lord of the manor. I am sure that the likes of Ian Rush and John Aldridge will tell you, half the goals they scored was because of Kenny.

Ken: I have wached Liverpool for nearly 45 years and I'm amazed that you have not mentioned Peter Thompson, the most exciting winger I have ever seen. His ball skills were unbelievable: he could pluck a ball from the air with his feet, even if it passed him at speed and at shoulder height.

michaelkahl95: Where is the legend that is Ray Kennedy? The man was a genius: he was on the scoresheet that famous night at Anfield against St Etienne along with Keegan and Fairclough.
