The Belgian, who has reached the final in her last three appearances in Canada, will now await the winner of the second semi-final between second seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic and Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin.

Yan, whose 169 world ranking was so low that she was an alternate in the Toronto qualifying draw, was the revelation of the tournament producing a string of upsets.

The 22-year-old doubles specialist claimed several big name scalps, including defending champion and world number four Ana Ivanovic and Wimbledon finalist and seventh seed Marion Bartoli, becoming the just the third Chinese player to reach the semi-final of a WTA Tier I event.

"I was very relaxed but she [Henin] played so well I had no chance," Yan said.

Playing her first event since a semi-final loss at Wimbledon, Henin wasted little time in stamping her authority on the match and broke Yan at the first opportunity.

Yan, however, would not be intimidated by the six-times grand slam winner and immediately broke back.

The two players traded breaks again but with the opening set level at 3-3, Henin's class surfaced and she overwhelmed Yan by sweeping the next nine games.

"I'm very pleased to be back in the final here again," said Henin, who will play for her sixth title of the season on Sunday.

"At the start, I wasn't really aggressive and had ups and downs in my concentration at the beginning at the match.

"But it has been like that all week, I had pretty tough starts and getting much better as the match moves forward."

After marching into the semi-finals, Yan's ranking is expected to shoot up to 80 and she now wants to make more of an impact on the singles circuit.

"Before I only played doubles and now singles ranking is higher I can play more tournament in singles," said Yan, who will have to qualify for the US Open because the entry list has already been confirmed.

"My singles play last year was not so good, many tournaments I lost first round. I have more confidence."
