Gutierrez: There's more to come

Mon 18 Aug, 03:30 PM

Jonas Gutierrez has promised more of the same on Saturday after making an impressive Premier League debut for Newcastle at Manchester United. The Argentina winger announced himself in style at Old Trafford on Sunday with a tireless display in the Magpies' 1-1 draw with the European champions before heading off on international duty with compatriot Fabricio Coloccini.

Kevin Keegan's South American duo are both in the squad for their country's clash with Belarus in Minsk this week, but will return in time to prepare for Saturday's visit of Bolton to St James' Park.

The pair, along with fellow summer signing Danny Guthrie, played significant roles in a hugely encouraging display at the Theatre of Dreams, and Jonas is promising a repeat performance back on Tyneside as his new club look to build upon that foundation.

He said: "We both like to play for our country. It is a great honour for us, so now we have a friendly match with Belarus and we go away very happy.

"We come back on Thursday night, which is near the Bolton match, but we will be prepared to play."

Coloccini in particular had little time to gel with his new team-mates before taking on the might of an admittedly under-strength United side.

However, after a nervous start, the £10million man adapted quickly to the pace of the English game as he and Steven Taylor formed a formidable partnership in a defence which looked far more resilient than at times in the recent past.

The former Deportivo la Coruna player's English is not yet as good as Jonas', who spoke for him.

He said: "Fabricio enjoyed the match. It was a great start for him and the rest of the team.

"He is looking forward to more, like I am."

Newcastle's record at Old Trafford is dismal - they have not won there since February 1972 and had lost 6-0 on their previous visit days after Sam Allardyce's departure.

  1. Im a Man U fan but i must admit the Magpies have a real quality player in Jonas. I watched him skin Rooney and seriously Wayne is one of the most determined players around, people normally get tackled or fouled but not get past him. If Newcastle get Owen scoring goals i would expect top 8 finish for Newcastle.

  2. see told you all to be patient - the new regime will come good - new signings are superb so the backroom staff are doing their respective jobs well - shola looks as if he is going & if you believe the press so is smith- we will need replacements for those, especially someone to stir up the strike department - but remember lets keep our feet on the ground it is going to be a long hard season with plenty of ups & downs, me thinx another 2 seasons with european money will put us back where we belong - stay positive

  3. I was very excisted from the display of Jonas, he is quick, both attacking and defensively minded, it brought back the old keegan era of over 10 years ago. I think KK has bought very well, just need a few more good quality players and who knows!

  6. It was a fantastic display of football.
the 3 new sigings were doing very good and gave a nice first time performance.
As the initial impression was very good.
Tho, Collocini wasnt aware of the english game therfore he did some fouls near the edge of the box and are dangerous. I hope he will learn quickly the defensive game in the Premier League.
    Martins Should Pass more often.
And Owen should be on his right side.
Letting Jonas and Martins (who are fast) be on the left wing together.
    Great ! KK rules !
