11:23 - Women's high jump: The final spots are decided: Kroger, Melfort and Shkolina join Vlasic, Beitia and Howard Lowe from group 'A' despite only jumping 1.92. Kroger needed only one effort to clear it and the others two. From the 'B' group there were six athletes who made it over 1.95: Friedrich, Green, Di Martino and Chicherova Acuff, as mentioned before, plus Elena Slesarenko. The Athens Olympic champion finished fourth in both Osaka 2007 and last year's Games.

11:07 - Women's 1500m: On the first lap of the 1500 American Shannon Rowbury hits the deck at the back of the group as there is a bit of pushing and shoving. She is back with them soon enough.
11:06 - Women's 1500m: The race begins. Three and a quarter laps of sheer hell (thinking back to school days...)
11:03 - Men's 400m: The three fastest losers are Lionel Larry (USA) from the first heat and two from the final one: Erison Hurtault (Dominica) and MohamedAshour Khouaja (Libya).
11:00 - Women's high jump: Emma Green of Sweden and Amy Acuff of the USA - in a season's best - through as the 'B' group take their 1.95 jumps.
10:57 - Men's discus: Zoltan Kovago (Hungary) and Virgilijus Alekna (Lithuania) have qualified from the 'B' group.
10:56 - Women's 1500m: The first round is coming up in under 10 minutes' time.
10:52 - Women's high jump - German blonde Ariane Friedrich clears 1.95 to join Anna Chicherova (Russia), Antonietta Di Martino (Italy), Howard Lowe and Beitia in the final. And Vlasic follows.
10:50 - Men's 400m: Rooney qualifies in third behind winner Tabarie Henry (Virgin Islands) - his time is 45.14 - and Sean Wroe of Australia in the outside lane.
10:48 - Men's 400m: The seventh heat of the one-lap sees a false start, the first of today's track action. Martyn Rooney running for Britain in lane one.
10:45 - Women's high jump: Croatian Vlasic is followed by Russian Ruth Beitia, Frenchwoman Melanie Melfort, another Russian in Svetlana Shkolina and Kazakh Marina Aitova in clearing 1.92.
10:40 - Men's 400m:Wariner, who was stunned to lose the Beijing 2008 final to friend Merritt after dominating for a long time - and working his way towards the world record of Michael Johnson - wins in a very comfortable 45.54 from Ricardo Chambers (Jamaica) and Teddy Venel (France).
10:30 - Men's 400m: Bahamas athlete Ramon Miller takes heat five in 45 seconds dead, Frenchman Leslie Djhone and Sweden's Johan Wissman also qualifying automatically. Next up: Jeremy Wariner.
10:28 - Men's 400m: Merritt ambles through the last few metres to win his heat in 45.23 from John Steffensen (Australia) and Gary Kikaya (DR Congo).
10:25 - Women's high jump: Meike Kroger (Germany) and Chaunte Howard Lowe (USA) have gone over 1.92. Half of the athletes are still to attempt that height.
10:22 - Men's 400m: Chris Brown of the Bahamas wins the third heat in 45.53 from British athlete Michael Bingham and Joel Milburn of Australia. Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt goes in the next heat.
10:18 - Men's discus: No further distances over the qualification mark of 64.50 - the best 12 will progress to the final when all throws are completed.
10:12 - Men's 400m: The second of seven heats is pretty quick, Renny Quow of Trinidad crossing the line in 45.21 ahead of William Collazo (Cuba) and Kevin Borlee (Belgium). There are only three fastest loser spots in the 400.
10:06 - Men's 400m: British athlete Robert Tobin leads around the final bend of heat one and looks around to make sure he can ease off - his time is 45.50. Top three qualify - behind him David Gillick (Ireland) and Rabah Yousif (Sudan) are the men who go through.
10:05 - Men's 400m: The men's one-lap heats are about to start.
09:55 - Men's 200m: The fastest losers to qualify for round two are Meite and Omar Jouma Bilal Al-Salfa (UAE) from heat two, David Alerte (France) from the third, Collins from the seventh and Thuso Mpuang (South Africa) from that last one.
09.54 - Men's 200m: Home athlete Robert Hering takes the final heat in 20.64 from better-known American Wallace Spearmo n and Canada's Gavin Smellie.
09:50 - Women's high jump: Defending champion Blanka Vlasic clears 1.85, the 15th athlete to do so. The qualification mark for Thursday's final is expected to be 1.95, although the best 12 jumps will decide matters if not enough make it over that height.
09:46 - Men's 200m: And that time of 20.83 is enough to win heat eight, Canadian Jared Connaughton doing the honours. Japanese Shinji Takahira looks across and eases off to finish just behind, with Stephane Buckland (Mauritius) third. The winning time is corrected to 20.82.
09:41 - Men's 200m: Collins struggles and can only take fourth, behind Frenchman Martial Mbandjock - whose time is 20.65 - Swiss Marco Cribari and Honduran Rolando Palacios . He and Collins both record a time of 20.83... Collins will go through anyway with that, it is the fastest losing time so far - but it does not bode well for his chances.
09:39 - Men's 200m: Gay then will not run as planned in the seventh heat of the 200. Kim Collins is the main name.
09:36 - Men's discus: No further qualifiers from the discus. The final will take place tomorrow evening - and Kanter says he will rest up, sleep and eat in preparation. Sounds like a cushy enough life...
09:34 - Men's 200m: Teenage Panamanian Alonso Edward takes heat six in 20.72 from Swiss Marc Schneeberger and Trinidad's Emmanuel Callander.
09:29 - Men's 200m: Bolt coasts round the bend and remarkably pulls away a little as he relaxes his stride in the final 20 metres or so. His time is 20.70. Rondell Sorrillo was the man huffing and puffing to catch him, while behind the Trinidadian Sam Effah also qualifies for the second round.
09:26 - Men's 200m: Everyone's favourite sprinter is up now - and he won't even have Tyson Gay to deal with in this 200 competition. This is, or was before the Beijing Olympics, Bolt's favoured event.
09:23 - Men's 200m: Devonish comfortable, coming through in 20.92 - and even turning to the camera running alongside the athletes to stick out his tongue. The rogue. Ramil Guliyev (Azerbaijan) and Marek Niit (Estonia) are the other qualifiers.
09:22 - Women's high jump: Qualifying is just beginning.
09:20 - Men's 200m: Marlon Devonish of Great Britain runs in the fourth heat, in lane eight. Bolt will go in the fifth heat and is chilling on the sidelines, as you'd expect.
09:18 - Men's 200m: Heat three in the half-lap sees Steve Mullings of Jamaica come through in 20.62, just 0.04 faster than Irishman Paul Hession and Japanese Kenji Fujimitsu.
09:15 - Men's discus: Four athletes have already qualified in the men's discus this morning. Robert Harting of Germany, Gerd Kanter (Estonia), Casey Malone (USA) and Mario Pestano (Spain) are those who can relax.
09:10 - Men's 200m: Heat two also has a clean start and a much closer finish, 20.81 the winning time for Brendan Christian of Antigua ahead of Aleixo-Platini Menga (Germany) and Charles Clark (USA). Ben Youssef Meite of Ivory Coast misses out in the photo finish - but there are five fastest loser spots up for grabs.
09:07 - Men's 200m: We are away first time and Crawford has no problems, easing over the line clear of the others in 20.60 seconds. The other two automatic qualifiers are Russian Roman Smirnov and Brian Dzingai of Zimbabwe.
09:05 - Men's 200m: Shawn Crawford is running in the first heat of the 200 metres, in lane four. Briton Dwain Chambers would have been in lane five but has a calf strain.
