Championship - Campbell eyes Newcastle move

Eurosport - Tue, 18 Aug 15:53:00 2009

Sol Campbell has revealed that he would "love to sign" for Newcastle United.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Portsmouth Sol Campbell - 0

The former England defender is a free agent after his contract at Portsmouth expired at the end of last season.

According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, the 34-year-old centre-back revealed his desire to join the club at a St James' Park corporate event following the club's 3-0 home win over Reading on Saturday.

Campbell said: "I would love to sign here if it's possible. But we'll have to wait and see."

The former Tottenham and Arsenal defender's fiancee is from the area, and they have recently bought an estate in Northumberland.

Although Campbell's wage demands could prove a stumbling block, that may be less of a concern now that Newcastle have seen Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Sebastien Bassong and Habib Beye depart. The Chronicle reports that those exits have brought the St James' annual wage bill down from £74m to £48m.

One negative side effect of Campbell's arrival would be that it could open the door for Steven Taylor to leave, amid reports that the defender is being chased by Everton.

The premiership need newcastle back and shearer to take the "id love it if we beat" approach of keegan. Bring in campbell, keep taylor and sign a nippy striker as carroll nd ameobi alone wnt get you back up!!! maybe a loan signing from the premiership! Good luck to newcastle and lets hope ashley fooks off for the good of the geordies nd football!

  9. I don't mind Campbell coming as he would do a good job in this division but not as it suggests at the end of the article at the expense of Taylor. He must be kept!

  10. " Bent Heads winner" post to you if you get a minute cameron,p.s last thing NUFC need is a static lump of wood in the middle of their defence when up against young, attack minded championship forwards

  11. listening to sky sports right at this second & they are saying that nufc have reported - that they are still negotiating with THREE consortiums who have agreed the £100m asking price.
barry moats consortium are confirmed as 1 of them
at last a bit of news but whomever takes over it is going to be too late for signings to come in

  12. cameron w, I would be ok with a pay as you play just to cover ourselves that he can still do a job, and wants to. I agree with the benefit to Kadar and the other young lads.

  14. I'm certain Campbell is gonna join, just as i am certain that Taylor is gonna leave!
He will NOT be offered silly money, we can be sure of that; and i personally think it wil be a good signing!
We need to remember that we are just a Championship club now - a skint one at that, so this could be a real bonus 'signing'! I also believe Campbell is from different stock to our usual 'freeloaders' like owen, viduka and geremi - he is a proud and honest pro; and his experience could prove to be invaluable to the likes of Kadar.

From cameron w, on Tue 18 Aug 12:00PM

  16. fail to see how letting taylor go would benefit our club - erverybody knows his feelings for us & he will be a future full international - he is one of the players who should be the nucleus of the "pheonix" magpies - & if we could get sol on a pay as you play basis this could only be beneficial!
scouring all of the gossip columns for news on the take over last friday was suposed to be deadline day with £25m deposited into a neutral bank for all parties interested to prove the funds were available

as for kadar the general gossip is that he is settling down in uk & his workrate has been applauded & that he will continue improving

  18. seventh i'm a mackem and i totally agree with you. hah what next????????
You're (as i said in a previous comment) doomed till another buyer comes along. But one with real money. Not a penny tossing fat gimp like ashley.
With you lot out of the game half of the fun is gone. I'm off to watch the lads play chelsea tonight. now we'll see what difference our summer signings have really made.
    and one more thing.
Sol isn't a good thing to do ....really.
It's a job near his new home and one where he thinks he won't have to do too much.
