Premier League - Pizarro out, Matic in for Chelsea

Chelsea have sold striker Claudio Pizarro to Werder Bremen on a permanent transfer, and brought in Serbian international midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Peruvian (pictured) spent last season on loan at the Weserstadion and scored 17 goals in 26 appearances, while helping them reach the UEFA Cup final.

"I am very happy we could seal the deal," Werder sports director Klaus Allofs said.

"It has been an issue for months and in the past weeks we intensified our efforts to get Claudio."

Bremen were Pizarro's first European club, spending two seasons there between 1999 and 2001 before moving to Bayern Munich then Chelsea.

He never settled at Stamford Bridge after joining in 2007, and scored just twice in 28 appearances.

"I am happy to be back as I wanted desperately to return to Werder," Pizarro said.

The Blues have also signed midfielder Matic from Slovakian club MFK Kosice.

The 21-year-old has been capped twice by Serbia and has completed his switch to Stamford Bridge for a fee of £1.5 million.

MSK president Blazej Podolak said the transfer was completed because "the money does not come in instalments, but immediately".

Matic does not need a work permit as he also holds Slovak nationality.

The 6'4" left-footer had a trial at Middlesbrough last season and played for Serbia at the recent U21 European Championships.

  19. Id have thought 7 mil for Pizarro would be a good­ amount. people like Bent move for 10 mil and havent­ played to the level Pizarro has.

    Matic is a good­ signing, another young player for the future in the­ position we dont really have 1 for. In a perfect world­ we'd get Aguero as a partner for Drogba and I think­ Van Der Vaart for extra right sided diamond player but­ as we stand the squad is better than anyone else's­ in the league. We could still afford to lose a couple­ more players but I see us signing a big player in­ January, especially since the Africans are away.
