World number one Roger Federer has been fined $1,500 (£915) by the United States Tennis Association for a heat of the battle argument with a US Open official.

Federer used a profanity when talking with the chair umpire during the final in New York on Monday which he eventually lost to Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro.

Federer's fine pales in comparison to Serena Williams who was docked $10,000 (£6,100) for threatening to shove a ball down the throat of a female line judge in an expletive-laden tirade in her final singles match.

Williams was also fined $500 (£300) for throwing her racquet.

Tournament spokesman Chris Widmaier says there were a total of $31,500 (19,200) in fines levied at the 2009 US Open.

Vera Zvonareva and Daniel Koellerer were fined the same amount as Federer for swearing.

Canadian doubles player Daniel Nestor was fined $5,000 (£3,050) for unsportsmanlike conduct directed at an unruly fans of his opponent who were cheering double faults.

  1. Its all to please the American TV audience. Money talks baby, and so spanish speaking Potro is not allowed to express himself. Even when he was eventually allowed after much pleading, they cut him short.
About Serena, she has done worse things before!

  3. very well said ngills35..I was shocked to see that a CHAMPION was begging to have a few words in his own acceptance speech (though it was over and he asked again but still it was just a matter of time). I never saw such an embarassing moment in my life of the tennis history...i don't think there was any racism It was just a shear stupidity from MC to say "No No we are running out of the time"..surely he was undermining a new comer....

  7. The whole US caucasian establishment of the US open system is racist. Maybe non caucasians ought to boycott in protest against the negatively biased ways they are treated. Wonder whether any one noticed that the MC FOR THE MENS FINALS TWICE REFUSED TO ALLOW CHAMPION DEL POTRO TO EXPRESS HIMSELF IN SPANISH TO HIS FAMILY AND FANS PRESENT. Well MC kept saying we dont have time, we dont have time. Eventually when Del Potro asked a third time at the point of tears, he kept rushing him. BAD BAD REALLY BAD AND RACIST. Well because, federer the LOSER was given more time to speak and even urged on to speak more. This is not good. Not good at all. Del Potro is a great and humble CHAMPION just like Nadal and unlike federer. On the issue of Federer's rant and arrogant abuse of the Umpire, well i hear people say it was out of character so its acceptable. Poor Serena, the one time she has stood up to challenge in frustration against 10 YEARS OF WRONG CALLS, she is branded bad. God be the judge- whether abusing line judge is a greater offense than abusing an umpire and blurting expletive on live TV to children- only the white caucasian system and press can tell

  8. You white @#$%, how can you not see the racist aspects of their judgement. Serena threatened with word as well as threw her racquet down,. Roger Federa spoke the word in the same aggresive manner. The two were fined just as the total fine for USO was 30,000 USD. So the rest that were fined have minor degrees of offence while the heaviest of offence was Serena's. Justified NO.. It is all white washed hatrate.. There seem to be everyone involved must get some money out of their pocket.. The same reason a fomer US president Jimmy Carter spoke openly about US Racism.. In this forum US officials are so debased to the extent of using a Chinese official to perpetrate their Racism.. Denied Serena her crown and gave it to undeserving eventual winner.. All that is white is bad.. Shame on you uncivilised white race..

  9. I realise that some comments on this article previously shown have now been removed. In any case let.s face, one bad decision could change the cause of a match and for umpires to make several of them in one match as important as the USO final leaves match to be desired. Their decisions could change the history books of the sport and must therefore be made to be more responsible. Roger.s conduct was not right but his points well all correct. He must pay the fine but what happens to the umpires whose actions - actions which could be inadvertent or blanatant attempt to deny somebody of an achievement.

  12. The lack of objectivity on this board is amazing. Can people not be quite so partisan but recognise when a player, even if it is the one they support is acting in a way which brings disrepute to the game. There is no way that Serena Williams' behaviour can be justified or excused, she threatened another person in a violent and intimidating manner. Federer's behaviour was out of character and directed at the seeming inconsistencies of the umpire's rulings during the match. Whilst his language was regrettable he was not aggressive and in the view of most pundits commentating on the match he was right in his questioning of the umpire. Who is at fault here are the Referees who do not insist that the umpires act consistently in applying the rules, Hawkeye challenges are meant to be immediate, not after the opposing player as I have previously stated has had the time to collect his towel from the ballboy and reach his chair for the changeover. The level of abuse by some on this board suggests that they are not real tennis fans, but merely wind up merchants with little grasp of the english language.

  16. This is the @#$% himself. An exact quote:

"No no no! It’s too late. Stop! Come on! I wasn't allowed to challenge after 2 seconds. The guy takes, like, 10 every time. You can't allow that stuff to happen. Do you have any rules in there or what? Stop showing me your hands, OK? Don't tell me to be quiet, OK? When I want to talk, I talk, all right? I don't give a @#$% what he said. I just say he waited too long. Don't f*cking tell me the rules. I wasn't allowed to challenge, like, 2 matches ago after 1 second. He takes 10 seconds. Oh, he likes the rules, right? Don't f*cking talk to me."

  18. Federer has 10 years of career as a proof what a gentleman he is. But let's not be hypocritical - everybody swears now and then in heated situations. One profanity doesn't invalidate 10 years of grace and immaculate behaviour even while being world No. 1, and being in the centre of attention, which normally exposes one's weaknesses.

That he got a fine - OK, right, if that's going to be the policy from now on, and whenever somebody swears - including Murray, Roddick - he gets the same.
But I have the sad feeling that outraged because of Serena's behaviour, the USTA wanted to show - at Federer's expense - how hard and uncompromising they are. If so, it was unjust.
All the more as mentioning the two cases in the same sentence gives the false impression as if they did the same: and this is very unfair. Federer was only frustrated and let it go in a swear, but Serena actually addressed her swears to a person and threatened her!
