Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker was sent home from training on Friday for disciplinary reasons, manager Martin O'Neill has revealed.
Reports have indicated O'Neill and Reo-Coker had a disagreement in training on Thursday.
When Reo-Coker arrived for training on Friday morning, he was told to stay away until Monday.
"There was a confrontation between Nigel and myself," O'Neill said.
"It usually happens between players really. There were no fisticuffs. There was no wrestling to the ground as reported in one newspaper. That was a figment of the onlookers' imagination.
"There was enough for me to treat the incident seriously enough. Nigel will not play against Portsmouth and come Monday it will be forgotten about.
"I make the rules. I am the manager and custodian of the football club so my rules apply. Players have to get used to my rules. It's as simple as that."
The bust-up could not have come at a worse time for former West Ham midfielder Reo-Coker.
Having spent most of last season playing out of position at right-back, he had just worked his way back into his favoured central midfield position.
He was linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the summer and this clash with O'Neill will undoubtedly cast a doubt over his long-term future at the club.

Wouldn't that b great, get them on a normal wage and see how they like it, plus the entrance fee's for games would b well cheap, like your thinking.
He's always come across as an arrogant git.
Hope this is the end of his Premiership playing days.
It would appear from reports that he was trouble at West Ham and now it seems he's acting the same at Villa, overpaid prat, they are all grossly overpaid which in turn, turns most of them into thinking they are better than everyone else, moan when the crowd turn against them, people who have paid to watch them. Put them all on a normal average living wage of about £25k, if they don't like it p.ss off. they touch the ball in total a maximum for about 1 minute during the ninty minutes, most only able to kick a ball with 1 foot, £25k would be too much. I prefer to watch park football.
o'niell is a legend! Reo-'cocker' is a waste of space
He needs to learn how to pass / shoot, otherwise he really is RB that can't cross a ball for his life.
