The Welsh side had beaten league leaders Nottingham Panthers 24 hours earlier but this was a much closer encounter for Gerad Adams's side.

Although that won't be a consolation for the out of luck Capitals, who have banked just one win in seven matches and were thumped by Belfast Giants on Friday night.

Cardiff took the lead through a rare Jason Stone strike in the fifth minute but Edinburgh cancelled it out just over a minute later, when youngster Mark Garside fired home.

Jay Latulippe restored Cardiff's advantage and Phil Hill increased their lead before Garside netted his second with 17 minutes remaining.

Edinburgh got close to an equaliser but after pulling their goalie late on, Mike Miller made the points safe with five seconds remaining, sweeping the puck into an empty net.

Meanwhile, in-form Belfast thumped hosts Hull Stingrays 8-2 to move within a point of the Elite League summit.

Colin Shields netted a hat-trick while Brandon Benedict was the frequent catalyst, contributing four assists.

Elsewhere, in Challenge Cup action, Sheffield Steelers beat Newcastle Vipers 5-2 while Nottingham edged past Coventry Blaze 3-1.
