Given rescues 10-man City

Ten-man Manchester City needed a brilliant late save from Shay Given to earn them a point in a 1-1 draw at Wigan.

City looked well-placed for victory once Martin Petrov had taken just 65 seconds of the second-half to cancel out Charles N'Zogbia's opener in first-half stoppage time.

But the dismissal of Pablo Zabaleta - for a second bookable offence - stopped City in their tracks and they needed Given to make a superb save to deny Hugo Rodallega as they earned a share of the spoils.

There was a paucity of chances for the visitors that did not sit easily with the growing feeling they will be involved in the title shake-up.

In contrast, Wigan, limited as they were, always gave the impression of a side pushing themselves to the limit.

A goalless opening period was drawing to a seemingly inevitable conclusion when Rodallega, set up by the industrious Jason Scotland, went for the far corner with an angled drive.

Given did well to keep it out. But the Republic of Ireland star, named skipper in the absence of Kolo Toure, could only push the ball into N'Zogbia's path and the former Newcastle man beat Wayne Bridge to slide the ball home.

The Blues took just 65 seconds to level after the restart and Carlos Tevez was the creator. After Mohamed Diame had over-run the Argentine's square ball, Petrov was left with a clear sight of goal and he found the bottom corner with a precise shot.

Zabaleta was shown a red for a tackle on Scotland and Wigan were more likely winners.

But Given was equal to Rodellaga's late volley to preserve a point for the visitors.

  1. -It's a safe bet that Blackburn Rovers will be glad to lose their tag of " the team with the most YELLOW (and RED)cards in the Premiership; they've been stuck with it quite a few times over the last few years. BUT NOT ANY MORE ....Mark Hughes has taken his obvious talents down the road. It was there to be seen on Sunday. If you didn't see it, don't feel left out---you will ! there's a long way to go yet. Just be patient

  2. It wasn't a 2nd bookable offence though was it Mr Whiley!!! It was the 1st because the earlier booking was not even a coming together. You missed a straight forward foul on SWP in the penalty area and you ARE a total incompetent and should be shown the door as far as top flight refereeing is concerned. Alex Ferguson was out of order with his challenge to your fitness but certainly, he was spot on with his condemnation of your performance. You have now contributed to cost MCFC 3 points in 2 games, how long are the FA going to tolerate your total incompetence?? The standard of refereeing in the EPL this season so far is scandulous and it is not only unfair to the teams that are having to tolerate it, it is grossly unfair to the public who pay high prices to watch their teams perform week in and week out only to be robbed by continuing incompetence from the games' so called officials.
