Tanasugarn wins battle of veterans
Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn ended veteran Kimiko Date Krumm's hope of making history, defeating the 40-year-old in the Japan Open final in Osaka.
Date Krumm had been looking to become the first player to win the title five times and also the oldest woman to win a WTA title, overtaking Billie Jean King, who won in Birmingham aged 39 in 1983.
But 33-year-old Tanasurgarn, who beat second seed Marion Bartoli in the semi-finals, was too strong for Date Krumm and eventually triumphed 7-6 6-7(4) 6-1 in three hours and seven minutes.
Date Krumm had beaten top seed Sam Stosur and Israel's third seed Shahar Peer on her run to the final.
