Int Football - Gerrard and Lampard out for England

Eurosport - Tue, 18 Nov 09:04:00 2008

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have been ruled out of England's friendly clash with Germany on Wednesday.

Liverpool skipper Gerrard had been withdrawn from contention by his club after picking up a groin injury against Bolton on Saturday.

Nevertheless, England coach Fabio Capello ordered the midfielder to report for duty at the national side's Hertfordshire training base on Sunday evening.

Having since confirmed that the Liverpool medical staff's diagnosis was indeed correct, Gerrard has been allowed to return to Merseyside to recuperate.

Lampard sustained a rib injury during Chelsea's game with West Brom at the weekend and scans showed he would not be fit enough to feature at the Olympic Stadium.

An FA statement confirmed: "Both were scanned this morning and have now been sent back to their clubs for further treatment."

Capello wasted no time in finding replacements for the midfield duo with Fulham's Jimmy Bullard and West Ham's Scott Parker called into the squad.

The pair's withdrawal has left Capello with just three of his first choice team available for England's first game in the German capital since 1972.

The Italian was already without Manchester United trio Wesley Brown, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, Chelsea pair Ashley and Joe Cole, and Wigan striker Emile Heskey.

Joe Hart also pulled out of the squad after sustaining an ankle injury over the weekend, with Blackburn's Paul Robinson called up to replace the Manchester City goalkeeper.

But captain John Terry, who was doubtful with a foot complaint after the weekend, completed a full training session and is in contention to lead England out in Berlin.

Considering the game comes in the middle of a busy domestic schedule, the pull-outs have raised the inevitable club versus country question.

But midfielder Michael Carrick insisted the fixture still holds importance.

"I'm playing for England and this is the stuff of dreams," Carrick, the only Mancehster United player in the squad, said.

"Germany versus England is a massive game and I've always dreamed to be part of one day. It's not a hindrance at all. I'm here and I want to play.

"The club versus country thing always pops up but as players we don't get involved in that. We want to be part of the England team. Germany versus England in Berlin is huge and we want to be part of that."

  3. I think that England will be able to hold strong in all positions, Upson and Bridge may not be world Class but they have shown that they are capable of performing for england when needed. Bridge played well for chelsea this weekend. Upson is a west ham regular. Richards is Quality and has played for england before and i dont need to tell you how good terry is. Midfield is good. Barry has played for england before and is good. Carrick is a Man Utd regular. Wright Whillips may get a game, he has been on fire since re-joining Man C. I could see Young or Walcott playing on the wing and they have both proved their ability over the past year or so. Defoe is in Red Hot form for Pompey so hopefully he will get a few. I think we have a good, strong, young team and I reckon it will be a draw but with goals.

  5. I think thats it's odd how, during a time of heavy domestic fixtures, the majority of the English starts for their club have shyed away with frankly pathetic injuries.
Gone are the days when players like Paul Ince and Terry Butcher would pull on an England shirt or continue playing with major injuries.
Good on Capello for making them show up and prove they were injured, but what has happened to the pride of playing for your country with the dogged determination that the English used to show?

  6. Clubs and managers should just shut up moaning about their players playing in their international side.
If a club wants the best players then they should realise that those best players will be playing for their country.

  7. If Capello is serious about doing well in the WC then he should bed in the new blood as most of those mentioned will be over the top by then. The admirable David James is pushing 40 Ferdinand is fast going downhill at 30 and Lampard Beckham Gerrard Terry Owen Heskey and the Coles will be around or well over that in two years. He will have to take some of them but it is not the answer. Give the new ones a chance. As we do not know them that well perhaps the boo boys will leave off too if they travel but do not expect much from this game. They will probably win 4 nil now to shut me up!!

  8. I bet all Lampard and Gerrard haters are convinced the FA medical staff covered for them and lied to Capello about their condition..

  9. I think , unfortunately, that if Germany have a good day, and they are reasonably injury free at present, they`ll beat the Engalnd team that`s available to Capello with ease! I hope not but i can see it coming!

  10. it ain't their fault they got injured. nobody wants to be injured its just conincidental. they're pros and they want to play for england and we can never doubt that. besides, jimmy bullard and scott parker does not sound too bad at all. plus we have carrick and barry. so i think we can hold our own in midfield. its defence that worries me. only 1 of them is a regular. likely starters are upson, bridge, and richards. all of whom i'm not so confident about

  11. lol aleksicn93... I'm James mate. For some reason when I post my name doesn't appear and I adopt the name of the next person to post! lol. But cheers for agreeing mate, think this match will be a big breath of fresh air for us all... even if we lose the lads will get some quality experience playing the germans. I have a sneaky suspicion we might actually put one over them, fingers crossed.

  14. This is disgusting but in reality a blessing in disguise! Play all the up coming stars who are at least hungry to perform for there country! if we beat Germany, the side should stay unchanged am=nd the superstars should be made to sit on the bench!

  20. This is one of the best comedies lately! =))

On top of Rooney, Ferdinand, Joe & Ashley Cole, Hargreaves (before his last operation I thought he'd be back very soon playing for England), Brown, Heskey being ALL RULED OUT, NO Gerrard and NO Lampard in the squad either???????? Only Terry, Barry and Walcott in the middle of all these new-comers? Suddenly I'm running out of reasons to even watch this.
