Premier League - Drogba hit with three-match ban

Eurosport - Tue, 18 Nov 20:54:00 2008

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been handed a three-match ban after admitting an FA charge of violent conduct.

2008-2009 Chelsea Didier Drogba - 0

The Ivorian was charged after throwing a coin back into the crowd during the Blues' Carling Cup tie against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on November 12.

Drogba was booked at the time of the incident, although referee Keith Stroud confirmed the yellow card was brandished for approaching the away fans and not for missile-throwing.

That left the door open for Drogba to be retrospectively punished and he will now miss the league games against Newcastle, Arsenal and Bolton.

Chelsea went on to lose to Burnley on penalties and immediately after the game, Drogba issued an apology for his actions.

"This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me," Drogba said at the time.

"The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt, I just want to apologise for it.

"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.

"It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more."

A three-match ban is considered standard punishment for such incidents; Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was also suspended for three games after a similar indiscretion in 2002.

  1. 3 match ban is an absolute joke..didier drogba has acted in an aggressive manner towards paying members of the genaral public, Eric cantona got a much sterner punishment for attacking a fan..... I dont care if in this instance it was only a coin thrown he still attacked the fans.

  2. To those blaming the crowd and saying the fa should have punished both sides? well im sure the police will be looking into the matter as far as the crowd are concerned, its not the fa's job to punish the fans thats down to the police, if the guilty fans are to be punished by the fa then the punishment can only be inflicted on the club, therefore chelsea should have get rap.
The other point is that football players onfield should not be behaving in a holligan manner, they are employed to play football(employment contract), and whilst doing so they should abide by good behaviour rules considering they are in a place of work. Drogba has technically attacked the supporters despite who started the actions, therfore it should be considered as gross misconduct, under most employment contracts gross misconduct would result in dismisssal, therfore Drogba should be punished further by Chelsea FC. Leave the crowd to the police to sort out

  3. Well lets all calm down and consider the facts

Fact one: Mr Drogba can hardly be described as the protector of sportsmanship and fair play, we have all witnessed his disgraceful antics on the field of play, Time after time tv replays have shown that.
Yes of course the sanctions against him are ridiculous.
And yes the so called power that be haven't got the Balls to stand up to the money men that now run OUR GAME, and the money men don't understand Us the true supporters. I worry for the future of our national sport.

  4. Respect to Drogba for addmitting the charges, however the throwing of coins at the players is a disgrace, Drogba had a moment of madness and addmitted he was wrong, where's the hooligan who threw it in the first place and when are you gonna come forward!! F*CKING COWARD!!
    MAN U FAN JEW.

  5. Hahahahaha. Brilliant Not sure why all the Chelsea fans are up in the arms over this ban. The over-reacting, diving cheat only got what he deserved. Further evidence of how small-minded and blind to their own teams indiscretions the average football fan is. Additonally, some of the comments here only serve to demonstate how these fans are no better than the coin-throwing Burnley fan.

  7. Football fans need to stop the nonsense of throwing coins at players! If you don't like the player boo them what ever not chuck things at then

  8. I think the FA is only focusing on one side of the coin, its idiots like these coin throwing supporters that in the major tornaments go abroad and give England a bad name by their hooliganism which goes unpunished at home. DD was wrong to throw the coins back at the crowd. Punish da hooligans as well as players, if hooligans are left unpunished as is happening now they will do it over and over again, its time this bad habit is broken to keep innocent football fans safe and entertained.

  9. Should the point not be that if things were not thrown at the players then maybe they would not be tempted to throw them back? Just because these players are paid far too much does not mean that they are beyond hooliganism. Where should the example start - on the pitch or on the terraces?

  10. Look at all these hideous chelski muppets calling for the Burnley fan to be hung drawn and quartered. You're acting all high and mighty now..... but it was all OK when your classless chav supporters were pelting Cesc Fabregas with leeks in the carling cup final wasn't it??!!
You are a hidoes club and I can't wait till Roman wants his 635milion pounds back--- liquidation and relegation for chelski!!

  11. Good.. the mindless thug deserves every bit of his punishment, in fact he should have got a longer ban, you cant go throwing things at the crowd it could have sparked a riot.

  12. Drogba is a fool. I don't know if you lot can remember this but when Beckham was playing for Man Utd he had coins thrown at him and instead of throwing them back he put them in his pocket. Surely that shows these idiots that throw them that it's not worth it. By the way can anyone use the spellcheck because it makes most of your arguments look poor when you can't spell

  14. Why do the F.A continually get away with bias towards London clubs??? How can Fergie get a 2 game ban for shouting at a ref yet this yeti @#$% Drogba gets one game more for throwing a coin into innocent fans!! The F.A are double standard arse wipes!! Rio misses a drugs test and yet despite offering to take one the next day! 8 month ban! Mutu guilty of shovelling coke up his nose! 7 month ban!! This really pisses me off and it's about time those F.A muppets were sorted out!! The Burnley fan that threw the coin should be shot!!! for not taking out that greasey haired Ivory Coast rent boy!!

  20. i am not sure why people use this comments page for anything but the discussion point.
the opinions of bigots and racists should be filtered out and abusers subsequently blocked.
Now to the discussion point,i think the punishment is justifies the actions, and also support most of the commonsense opinions on here that the initiator in this matter should also recieve just punishments
