Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been handed a three-match ban after admitting an FA charge of violent conduct.
The Ivorian was charged after throwing a coin back into the crowd during the Blues' Carling Cup tie against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on November 12.
Drogba was booked at the time of the incident, although referee Keith Stroud confirmed the yellow card was brandished for approaching the away fans and not for missile-throwing.
That left the door open for Drogba to be retrospectively punished and he will now miss the league games against Newcastle, Arsenal and Bolton.
Chelsea went on to lose to Burnley on penalties and immediately after the game, Drogba issued an apology for his actions.
"This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me," Drogba said at the time.
"The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt, I just want to apologise for it.
"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.
"It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more."
A three-match ban is considered standard punishment for such incidents; Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was also suspended for three games after a similar indiscretion in 2002.

3 match ban!? what a disgrace! the billions of abramovich speak loud and clear .
How come Fergie gets a £10,000 fine and banned from touchline for 2 games for remonstrating with the ref but this @#$% only gets a 3 game ban. He should have been fined one weeks wages.
3 Match ban and a facking shyte hair do!
Wongagain Woss should get the sack too !
And the knobhead who chucked the coin in the first place should be chained naked to the gates of Stamford Bridge for life !
Has the death penalty been reinstated yet ?
PLS LET FA INVESTIGATOR PUT FULL STOP ON DIS INSOLENCE,HW CAN A FAN STROW MISSILE TO A PLAYER,IS BLUSHING AND DISGUSTING.IS UNACEPTABLE SO FAR FOOTBALL IS CONCERN.PERIOD.
HERE IS MY QUESTION,HAVE THEY IDENTIFY THE IDIOT DAT THROW COIN TO DD?FA U VERY SILLY 4 NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL.MAKE MY WORD ANOTHER MISABLE PERSON WILL DO DESAME. SHAME ON U USELESS FA INVESTIGETORS AND THEY ARE MYOPIC AND STUPID.I TOT U HAVE FORESIGHT NOT KNWING U VERY STUPID FOR BANNING HIT MAN DD.
Firstly, whoever threw the coins at Drogba are cowards! I am not a chelsea supporter, however, can understand why he threw the coin back because why should stand for it? The only time something will ever get done about this is when someone gets blinded or seriously injured from one those coin throwing idoits.
Anyone, who throws a coin at another person deserves a good kicking or a good crack! Put it this way after Cantona taking a hands on approach that so called fan a few years ago the coward didn't repeat his behaviour! To all those do-gooders who want players/others to follow the so called rules procedure. You lot only benefit the crook and go so far as to provide them with a licence to do whatever they please and you lot will be partly to blame for someone getting seriously injured in the future. Good on Drogba and its a shame you couldn't have flattened him too!
some ppl sending same comment 5 or 6 times, thats funny.the problem is not just drogba this is a big problem for fa.what drogba did was stupid,go and celebrate your goal in front of your fans.but the person who throw that was stupid too.fans like that person and footballer like drogba is just shame on football.

ITS @#$% 3 MATCH BAN CANTONA GOT 6 MONTHS FOR LESS AT LEAST CANTONA KICKED THE PERSON WHO OFFENDED AGAINST HIM DOGBREATH COULD OF HIT A LITTLE KID OR ANYONE WITH HIS ACTIONS ITS A JOKE
He has a 3-match ban, as if he even had to play any of them. He has playing the benches with other players and Anelka has been upfront instead of him. So, I don't see what that will change. Chelsea has been winning without him. They should have fined him!!!
I am not a Chelsea fan nor will I ever be but, what about the shithead who started it, has he been identified? will he be punished and docked three weeks wages, of course not yet until they identfy these idiots who still live and behave like the morons in the lower divisions it will go on and I don't absolved all Premier fans from this behaviour.
Should have been three years but it's a start :-)
he is facking useless
Anelka is way better
Shaun C - Whinge about what - the fact that DD got a fair punishment? Get a life!
What punishment did the Burnley idiot get for throwing the coin in the first instance? A lifetime ban I hope.
thbmsilas eh chelsea weren't getting beat they had just went in front and he just scored. dont u read or know anything?
Did he get a FINE?
D punishmt is hash but accepted in good fate. It should be done 2 everybody not just drogba. It will b folly on d fa, if notin is done 2 burnley fans.
