Premier League - Shearer is the answer - Lee

Eurosport - Tue, 18 Nov 15:45:00 2008

The answer to Newcastle's problems lies in the appointment of Alan Shearer as manager, according to former Magpies player Rob Lee.

FOOTBALL - Alan Shearer, Newcastle United - 0

Lee believes his former team-mate will one day take charge of the club and help owner Mike Ashley win over beleaguered fans at St James' Park.

"I can honestly say, yes, Alan Shearer will manage Newcastle," Lee told The Mag, Newcastle's leading fanzine.

"Until now I would have just said that he would one day but I finally believe that he would tomorrow if the job is how he wants it, without all the silly games going on that have killed it."

Shearer, a firm Toon favourite having spent 10 happy years there between 1996 and 2006, has long been with linked with the managerial hot seat but has always preferred to stay in his job as a television pundit.

Current incumbent Joe Kinnear, who succeeded Kevin Keegan in September, remains - for the moment at least - an interim solution but Lee believes Shearer should be given a chance to guide Newcastle out of trouble.

"Mike Ashley would solve a lot of his problems by appointing Alan and accepting that mistakes have been made," Lee added.

"Alan could be a priceless get out of jail card. Now is the time to make the club what we all want."

But Lee's views are not universally shared, with Toon midfielder Damien Duff insisting Kinnear is the right man to take the club forward in the long-term.

Following the turmoil that Keegan's shock resignation created, Kinnear has managed to steady the Newcastle ship, picking up two wins from the seven games he has overseen so far.

And Duff is convinced his fellow Irishman has already done enough to deserve the role on a permanent basis.

Duff told skysports.com: "From a football point of view I think we have done that (found stability) at the minute with Joe coming in. He has steadied the ship.

"We have got some good results under him. He has done well. But obviously from the top, the owner is trying to sell the club so hopefully we can get that resolved sooner rather than later.

"He has done what he has in a quiet way. He hasn't really come in shouting from the rooftops. He is someone to answer to. You need that in every line of work. I think the results have shown his impact."

  1. At the moment I can not see it happening. Ashley is keeping quiet by his absence, a man who does not give a @#$% about NUFC. JK has a hard job to do with players who don`t really care if NUFC do get relegated, because they will simply move on to pastures new.
NUFC, if they are relegated will certainly fall in value and Ashley will lose even more money. Wise is reported in the local rag as being trailing a player from Blackburn - who is going to pay the money Mr Wise?
The only player who gives 100% at the moment is Shay Given, whom I suspect, will soon be moving away from NUFC.

  3. the scunks need to udnerstand shearer is scared of them, he knows that if he takes the job, be hero welcommed then spend big on total big time charlies with attitude problems, start getting beat, finish 14th, get boooed and then resign, as all nufc managers do. They win nothing and get boooed until they are sacked for the next numpty.

    I hope they get relegated

  5. I don't think it's anything to do with chickening out taff. He just doesn't want his career in football ruined by taking on the poisoned chalice that is Newcastle.

  6. Shearer is the ONLY man for the job but will he chicken out? If he does not make it the fans will turn on him and he is a local boy. I think he has got to have a go and bring in Sir Bobby to help him. For God's sake do not start talking about Keegan again but his name will crop up and you will be back to square one

  7. Yes, he is the perfect answer. Someone with absoloutely NO managerial experience whatsoever...

When will they learn that taking another gamble on a manager is not what they need right now. They need someone proven at this point in time instead of dreaming of instant success with former players managing them.

  8. Shearer needs to get some management experience under his belt first; I can't think of anyone who has moved from punditry to management - I'm sure someone will tell me if I am wrong... I think Andy Gray was linked to Everton a few years ago?

Joe Kinnear is the best man for the job because he's probably the only one who wants it! As it stands at the moment, the ship is beginning to steady, but we need a few more good results - look at the table and we could soon be up in the top half ... Hopefully we can remain in the Premiership without having to rely on other teams' wheels falling off!

  9. To "Dave p" -

If Shearer is the answer so what is the question??

Shearer is a Pro in everything he will do in the football field.

I do think that shearer will make things better.

  10. I don,t think shearer fits the bill, although he was asuperb striker, he lacks charisma and does not look like a effective motivator. Stick to the couch, Al.

  15. Shearer is the right man for the job but he definitely needs some experience coaching or being someone else's number 2, u guys talk about no charisma. But on MOTD when he talks the other pundits dont dispute his answer they always agree with him but he doesnt always agree with their analysis. He was the type of player who u knew if he had a clear shot on goal then it was going to fly in and he would do that crappy celebration. How can u guys talk about his charisma when u dont play professional football or even meet him in real life? LOL. Also MOTD is a lot of video analysis, and i know that managers inbetween matches in the EPL always use video to scout players or the next team etc.

  16. I cant see Alan Shearer or any of the other so call match pundit, like Andy Gray or the other who talk rubbish week -in week -out on sky goin into management, take Andy Gray for example he sit after every game even if you win 3-0 or you lose 3-0 and directs on a moniotor that you should of done that or done this wasn't he offer a managerial role a couple years back. But instead he prefers to seat on skys couch and make easy money do you blame him i think Mr.Sheare will do the same.

  18. shearer will be a disaster at the toon job, he should be under the guidance of somebody for a while first. kinnear is doin ok at the moment so why do you need to print this sort of thing?

  19. Shearer? Joke! Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesborough all suffer from the same problem. They are in the North East, which means they have to pay more for average players to make them come to a really grim area of a grim country, we always slag of foreigners for wanting to play in London. Can you see our boys playing in regional towns in foreign countries?????

    From brap999, on Tue 18 Nov 10:28AM
  20. Everyone know's you have to be completely stupid to go and manage the 'toon and everybody knows that Shearer is the man for the job. It is a good job that Shearer has thus far proved not to be stupid :-)
