Premier League - Shearer is the answer - Lee

Eurosport - Tue, 18 Nov 15:45:00 2008

The answer to Newcastle's problems lies in the appointment of Alan Shearer as manager, according to former Magpies player Rob Lee.

FOOTBALL - Alan Shearer, Newcastle United - 0

Lee believes his former team-mate will one day take charge of the club and help owner Mike Ashley win over beleaguered fans at St James' Park.

"I can honestly say, yes, Alan Shearer will manage Newcastle," Lee told The Mag, Newcastle's leading fanzine.

"Until now I would have just said that he would one day but I finally believe that he would tomorrow if the job is how he wants it, without all the silly games going on that have killed it."

Shearer, a firm Toon favourite having spent 10 happy years there between 1996 and 2006, has long been with linked with the managerial hot seat but has always preferred to stay in his job as a television pundit.

Current incumbent Joe Kinnear, who succeeded Kevin Keegan in September, remains - for the moment at least - an interim solution but Lee believes Shearer should be given a chance to guide Newcastle out of trouble.

"Mike Ashley would solve a lot of his problems by appointing Alan and accepting that mistakes have been made," Lee added.

"Alan could be a priceless get out of jail card. Now is the time to make the club what we all want."

But Lee's views are not universally shared, with Toon midfielder Damien Duff insisting Kinnear is the right man to take the club forward in the long-term.

Following the turmoil that Keegan's shock resignation created, Kinnear has managed to steady the Newcastle ship, picking up two wins from the seven games he has overseen so far.

And Duff is convinced his fellow Irishman has already done enough to deserve the role on a permanent basis.

Duff told skysports.com: "From a football point of view I think we have done that (found stability) at the minute with Joe coming in. He has steadied the ship.

"We have got some good results under him. He has done well. But obviously from the top, the owner is trying to sell the club so hopefully we can get that resolved sooner rather than later.

"He has done what he has in a quiet way. He hasn't really come in shouting from the rooftops. He is someone to answer to. You need that in every line of work. I think the results have shown his impact."

  1. I thought it was Scott Parker that threatened to lay N'Zogbai out during the team talk with Roeder. He also threatened to stick his mobile phone up his arse (perhaps he should have stayed at Chelsea and waited for Ashley Cole's arrival). Shearer, I'm afraid, is way too comfortable on the sofas at the BBC. He says he loves the club and that he wants to manage it one day, but he is either being very considered in his approach (who wants to cut their teeth in management in a disaster zone??) or he hasn't got the balls to take on the challenge. If he takes the job, he'll have to be ready to risk losing a little of his legendary status, but after what he did for us as a player, he'd be cut a lot of slack as a manager. Who knows, he might even be good at it.

  2. I don,t think shearer fits the bill, although he was asuperb striker, he lacks charisma and does not look like a effective motivator. Stick to the couch, Al.

  4. I have no dount Shearer will one day manage newcastle the only problem is at the moment he has to much to loose. He will wait till the Newcastle ship has been settled and has a firm base to work form there is just to much going on at the club for him to take the risk

  5. Im sorry to say but Shearer just does not seem to have the guts to take on the hot seat, he has been encouraged by millions of toon fans and yet he has resorted to Live TV commentry..ha ha ha .... this is not fitting for a premiership manager. Id lv him to prove me wrong but then iv got a good feeling im too close to the truth. So if you think you have the magic one "King Alan" go on and make the call you know that you will be given the opportunity, so what are you hidding from ?

  6. Shearer / Kinnear ticket for the rest of the season would keep the fans and players happy I think. (Apart from N'Zogbia who he threatened to lay out for texting during a Roeder team talk..).
