Your view: Ferrari rule the roost

Eurosport - Mon, 19 Jan 15:42:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers have voted Ferrari as the greatest constructor in Formula One history, with McLaren easing home in second and Lotus the best of the rest.

FORMULA 1 2008 Ferrari Logo - 0

The Prancing Horse garnered half of the vote, with over 8,000 of you registering your opinion on the matter.

British squad McLaren was over 1,500 behind the grand Italian marque with 32 per cent, but comfortably ahead of their nearest rival Lotus (eight per cent).

Williams and Alfa Romeo had a decent showing with Tyrell and Brabham tied at one per cent - although the former nicked sixth spot by a few votes.

British Racing Motors were backed by less than 50 people and so finished with the grand total of zero per cent.

Which is the greatest constructor in Formula One history?

What you said:

Alan P: I was always a Lotus fan. You have to admit that Colin Chapman's innovation and Jim Clark's driving were something to behold. But although I hate to admit it - particularly because of what we perceive as the 'unfair advantage' that they enjoy - I'm afraid it has to be Ferrari. They are the only team to be in there from day one.

bobtailgrove: Despite being rotten to the core, Ferrari. They are synonymous with the sport of F1 with a truly amazing history and pedigree; it's a shame about the corruption. Lotus got to be up there as well.

Napierrailton: Nobody really likes Ferrari, but they get the vote because they have been around longer and so would obviously have had more chance to win more often. Had Williams, Lotus and McLaren been around that long then they probably would have won more than Ferrari.

andy k: Short answer: blatantly Ferrari. Who else? Long answer: Lotus made the most interesting cars and won quite a lot in a short period; Williams for me defined the period I really got into the sport; but eight titles with eight different drivers? Says it all really.

claudebastide: This isn't even close. There is no other team with a record like Ferrari's. No other team can inspire so much passion. No other team makes F1 drivers drool at the thought of driving for them. But honours go to the great British car racing tradition as a whole.

Adrian W: McLaren don't exactly stimulate the senses do they? Coolly clinical, but they don't generate the passion that Ferrari, Williams and Lotus do.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: A very difficult one. For me it has to be Williams. To have such an impact in such a relatively short time must make them the greatest. Ferrari may be synonymous with F1, even to the point that some think they own it, but they have been in it for a long time and have had massive resources at their disposal.

justblowinoffsteam: Surely the question is who is the greatest constructor in F1? Not the team who has won the most or been around for the longest. If constructor is the key, then take a look at which of them has brought more into F1 than any other. That says to me the one who has been at the forefront of design and technology - innovation and engineering. Ferrari stand alone in the amount of time they have taken part, granted, but what did they do to improve F1 in terms of technology? It has to be Lotus or even Brabham and the fan car.

sdcharger717: As much as I love Tyrell (with Lotus a close second), from a historical standpoint, it will have to be Ferrari. Through most of the Sixties and Seventies, Cosworth was the standard engine (remember the garagistas?), but Ferrari stuck with their own even when they were considerably underpowered.

Oliver Tunnah: How can it be anybody but Williams? They are a true racing team.

MikeQ: It's interesting that most of the arguments for Ferrari are variations on 'we have lasted the longest'; the question was who is the greatest constructor, not the oldest! Ferrari have clearly been great contributors to F1, but it appears that most of their fans are unaware of any of their achievements.

teo: Ferrari is the greatest (in terms of) history, legendary standing and racing. Just thinking about that horse sends shivers down the spine. Then it would be Lotus (bring them back!) and Williams.

  6. To anyone who knows the rules...can i ask a question that has bothered me for the last few years?
Are drivers allowed to change cars mid race like they used too? Is there anything that actually says they cannot?

  8. Paul, I will make you a deal. If Ferrari are caught cheating this year, I will be the first one to denounce them. However, it will take more than a few posts on this forum to convince me that they are actually cheating. If you think that all of the other teams are not looking at loopholes in the regulations, you are deluding yourself. I will agree with you on one thing: let's hope for a clean, controversy-free season. May the best car/driver win, regardless of who it is.

  9. Françoise, n'oublie pas que la plupart des gens qui ont voté sont anglais. Je suis d'accord que Renault devrait être parmi les 3 ou 4 meilleurs.

  14. Easy Paul. No one has actually said that Ferrari's car was illegal. They are "wondering" about it. Besides, they have not raced yet, have they?? Save your hatred for when the season actually begins.

  19. Forza Ferrari, most or some of these people just have a deep hatred for Ferrari, so don't worry about what they may say. There is no Formula 1 without the Red Horse. I agree with you, 2009 is here, have a nice day.
